Great book for past life regression, hypnotherapy or spiritual healing practitioners and students, packed with advice and techniques on conducting healing journeys through many dimensions and realities in order to heal client's emotional and physical issues. This is a multidisciplinary book, combining quantum healing, past life regression, afterlife exploration, shamanism, hypnotherapy etc. It might be too complicated for general audience, but a great resource for working practitioners in hypnotherapy, guided meditation, past life regression, modern day shamanism and other holistic body/mind healing modalities.

This is an excellent handbook for spiritually directed hypnosis practitioners and for those interested in inner journey work. It is highly informative and contains a gold mine of valuable hints and tips that can be added to one’s toolbox. The book covers both basic and advanced teachings and techniques that are well aligned with our modern view of quantum physics and its inherent role in consciousness. Lorna Wilson offers a client-centered approach that allows people to explore and engage various aspects of Self, and to bring that wisdom forward so that it can be integrated into conscious awareness.

About the Author

Geoff Relph is the Director of Inventory Matters Consultants and teaches in the Logistics and Operations Management Masters Degree program at the University of Warwick. He has worked in production control, MRP operations and inventory management at companies such as Rolls Royce Motors and IBM.

Catherine Milner is an engineer with experience working in aerospace, petrochemicals, and telecommunications, mainly in operational roles and an Associate Consultant with Inventory Matters Consultants. She has managed many successful projects on electronic data exchange with customers, forecasting, MRP, supply chain management, and business process re-engineering.

Interesting coverage of the complexities and opportunities associated with inventory management

Inventory Management: Advanced Methods for Managing Inventory within Business Systems by Dr. Geoff Relph and Catherine Milner (Kogan Page, July 2015) is accurately described by the authors in their introduction as achieving a balance between the philosophical and the practical. In fact, despite the complexity or maturity of their approach (appropriate given the ‘Advanced Methods’ designation in the title) all of the Excel-based tools for modeling inventory requirements based on the book are available for download. It doesn’t get more practical than that.

A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the k-curve methodology developed in the 1980’s - 1990’s by Relph while he was working for IBM. It is now administered by Inventory Matters, a UK-based consultancy. I will not insult the authors or their potential readers by attempting to explain that part of the book – if you’re ready for truly advanced inventory management methods, you’ll need to read it yourself.

That being said, there is also interesting coverage of the complexities and opportunities associated with inventory management outside of mind-bending data modeling. The authors talk about the ‘dichotomy of inventory’ as a balance between needing to have materials on hand to supply the operation and needing to minimize products on hand for the impact it has on working capital. From a strategy perspective, leaders should look carefully at all business decisions that increase inventory, and therefore cost money. Also important is the connection between inventory as an execution of financial strategy and as an operational reality.

I particularly enjoyed the sections of the book that discuss the factors that influence inventory levels separate the levels themselves. In other words, there is a close tie between inventory levels held and the reaction time or agility that is required in the case of a disruption. Those with inventory responsibility should study both changes in the factors that influence inventory levels and the relationship between those factors and the tolerance levels that accompany them.

The safest bet – stockpiling - is at the same time the most costly and limiting. Leaders need to resist the urge to have strictly short-term responses to short term trends and challenges, because the time required to recover can be debilitating. The authors included a few great case studies showing the different auto manufacturer responses to reduced demand for cars in the Great Depression and in the recession of 2008. The take away here is that finding a way to scale back operations to reflect reductions in demand is preferable to an all-or-nothing production and supply mentality that leads to factory shut-downs.

If inventory may be some combination of early/late (timing) and high/low (demand), the more pressing issues to handle late deliveries and high demand as they have the greatest negative impact to revenue. For each factor to be handled by a safety stock program – for instance supplier performance vs. uncertain demand – the risk increases with the complexity of accurate forecasting. Each lever for managing inventory that a company must pull reduces their overall cost effectiveness.

Finally, speaking of effectiveness, visibility and communication are as critical to advanced inventory management as they are to any other supply management effort. They are key to being able to react efficiently to demand signals both up and downstream in the supply chain.

About the Author

Marge Lial (late) was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received bachelor's and master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, was affiliated with American River College. An avid reader and traveler, her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. Her interest in archeology lead to trips to various digs and ruin sites, producing some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

Thomas W. Hungerford received his bachelor’s degree from Holy Cross and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He taught for many years at the University of Washington (Seattle) before moving to Cleveland State University in 1980. He has been at St. Louis University since 2003. He has written a number of research articles in algebra and several in mathematics education. Dr. Hungerford is the author or coauthor of more than a dozen mathematics textbooks, ranging from high school to graduate level, several of which are published by Addison-Wesley. He is active in promoting the effective use of technology in mathematics instruction. Dr. Hungerford has also been a referee and reviewer for various mathematical journals and has served on National Science Foundation panels for selecting grant recipients.

John P. Holcomb, Jr. received his bachelor's degree from St. Bonaventure University and his Ph.D. from the University at Albany, State University of New York. He is professor and chair and frequently publishes with researchers in a variety of disciplines where he provides statistical analysis. Dr. Holcomb has also authored several papers in statistical education and is very active in the American Statistical Association and the Mathematical Association of America. He was named a Carnegie Scholar in 2000 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and in 2003 received the Waller Award from the American Statistical Association for outstanding teaching of introductory statistics.

Bernadette Mullins received her bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University and her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. She is currently professor of mathematics at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama, where she arrived in 2000. She has published numerous articles in the fields of commutative ring theory and mathematics education. She has served as co-investigator for several National Science Foundation grants related to improving mathematics education. Dr. Mullins has won four awards for her excellence in teaching, including the Bob Whetstone award at BSC. Throughout her career, she has been active in Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) and the Mathematical Association of America, and was elected Alabama State Director of the MAA in 2013.

Good, but not great

This text was required for a Business Calculus class at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. As far as a mathematics textbook goes, it is an ok book. However, it could be a lot better. In my experience, the gold standard is Blitzer's College Algebra, College Algebra (6th Edition), which I used in high school.
The lessons themselves are not terrible at guiding students through the various concepts taught. The progression is gentle (almost too gentle) and doesn't do a good job at showing what's next. Which I found made it more difficult to tie chapters together.
Lial's text also includes example problems, "life applications," and somewhat step-by-step instructions. The instructions/examples are alright, but lack a lot of natural language and true step-by-step examples. The life applications are good and do a great job of showing how various vocations incorporate concepts.
Overall, I would not recommend this text to anyone looking for a text to use (see Blitzer), but if you have been assigned this book, it's not the worst. With the right teacher one can definitely learn calculus.

What just happened?? This is not your typical romance. The only words that I have for this novel is rough and aggressive. The relationship between Eric and Faith is intense and brutal. Over time that shifts and transforms, but it is almost overwhelming. I don't know how I feel about the aggression that becomes a sweet romance. It is a hot and cold area for me. At points this seems hot and intriguing, but at moments I was astounded and deterred by the situation. Due to my complete and utter bewilderment of the story I have rated Fighting Faith a three book, because it is not something I could say I love without a doubt. I have a pile of concerns about the story that I don't feel comfortable with.

About the Author

Niall Murphy has worked in the I.T. and Internet industries since 1995. His initial exposure to computers came with an Amstrad CPC 464 in the early 1980s, from which he never recovered. In college, Niall founded the UCD Internet Society which, at its height, gave Internet access to over two and a half thousand students who would not otherwise have had it. He also played way too much chess.

During the process of obtaining a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics, he held down a variety of programming, system and network administration and security-related jobs. After college, he went on to found his own consulting company, and participate in the start-up phase of a large number of companies and projects including Club Internet, Digifone On-Line, and Hutchison 3G. He used to run the root nameservers for Ireland, and is proud of having started five RIPE LIRs.

He has experience in networking of almost every kind (with the grateful exception of X.25) UNIX and Windows system administration, C systems programming, Perl, PHP, database creation and management, and Internet/IP services of all kinds, with specialities in database-backed web applications, wireless networking and next-generation networking.

As per the old adage, he thinks UNIX is the worst operating system there is, apart from all the others. He is a published poet, RFC co-author and O' Reilly co-author who does landscape photography for fun; you can see some of his work at South Bull Photography.

David Malone is a mathematician-cum-sysadmin. He is a researcher in the Hamilton Institute in Maynooth, Ireland, working on mathematical models of communications networks. Since 1994, he's also been a member of the sysadmin team of the School of Mathematics located in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. There he helps to maintain a Unix-like service provided by FreeBSD and Linux machines. Naturally, they all speak IPv6.

Great book

I needed to learn IPv6 for my job and this book told me everything I need to know. It answered all my questions much faster and more efficiently than google searching.

Well worth the money in how much time it will save you.

Not much platform-specific stuff, but there is no way they could have covered all the platforms. I am working with VMS, AIX, Tru64 and HPUX, and you really can't expect every platform to be covered. Consult local documentation for platform specifics.

The IPv6 book for those waiting to learn about IPv6

IPv6 Network Administration is an absolutely first-rate technical guide. It is refreshing to read a book that doesn't waste time by assuming the reader has no networking background. IPv6 Network Administration achieves just the right balance between history, theory, and practical application to serve the needs of administrators and interested readers. If you've been waiting for the right resource from which to learn IPv6, this book is it.

The preface, a less than useful part of many books, offers an interesting history of IPv6 development. Rather than assume IPv4 is worthless, ch 1 and 2 debate IPv4's merits; ch 1 is anti-IPv4 and ch 2 is pro-IPv4. In ch 3 we learn IPv6 details, and here the authors' writing style and judgement shines. They avoid describing every detail of IPv6, and instead summarize or present just the important parts of the protocol. This technique could have earned the book the title "Practical IPv6".

Another smart choice made by the authors involves relating IPv6 concepts in IPv4 terms, where possible and appropriate. For example, ch 3 shows how neighbor solicitation fulfills a role similar to ARP. It will be many years before any student of networking will have to ignore learning IPv4, so I appreciate authors who speak in familiar terms.

Beginning in ch 5 and elsewhere, the authors make a third excellent decision. Rather than just present a Linux command reference and a Windows command reference, they present syntax for many operating systems and networking devices. This must have taken a decent amount of research, but such level of detail makes the work accessible to a wide audience. I found the use of FreeBSD in repeated examples to be particularly appealing.

The authors are not shy about saying what works and what doesn't when IPv6 is involved. In ch 7 they present some novel ways to work around certain issues, e.g., using netcat6 for port forwarding IPv6 traffic. They even show programming examples and outline new aspects of the sockets API to handle IPv6 addressing in ch 8.

Finally, IPv6 Network Administration presents workable ways for admins to give IPv6 a try, such as 6to4 and other tunnel methods. Almost anyone with a public IP address should be able to experiment with IPv6 thanks to the book's directions. Given that I operate multiple IPv6-capable systems in my lab, I was able to test some of the book's commands using link-local addressing (described in the text).

In brief, this is a must-have book for all network administrators. Even if you never intend to deploy IPv6, you should understand it as a professional technician. As a personal observation, I see many opportunities for intruders to exploit misconfigurations, poor coding, and various complexities in IPv6 (such as the huge variety of addresses assigned to single machines). IPv6 Network Administration will help get an IPv6 network running, at least to the point where administrators can begin becoming familiar with this new network protocol.

Poor treatment of IPv6 itself, halfway decent for IPv4 to IPv6 transition options

I bought this book to understand IPv6 so I know the meaning behind the various vendor-specific IPv6 knobs I will have to tweak in the near future, e.g. Cisco, Microsoft, *nix etc. I was misled by the "..Network Administration" in the title. Which, to me, usually represents a book with how-tos - and relevant rationale - pertaining to IPv6 on various platforms. A better title for this book is: "IPv6 - Planning Your Transition".

What I got instead was sort of a relaxed technical rambling from a couple of guys that clearly know IPv6 but don't know the next thing about how to teach others about it. (Think of two super-qualified IPv6 experts musing aloud about IPv6 while sitting in comfy leather chairs, wearing cardigans with elbow patches, beside a crackling fireplace, in a mountain cabin, in snowy weather.) I suffered through two whole chapters of the obligatory pros and cons of IPv4 at the beginning only to see IPv6's workings disposed off in a single chapter. Albeit with promises that we would "..get down to the juicy details later in Chapters 4 and 6." No such luck I'm afraid.

The book also suffers from a particularly acute case of let-me-tell-why-this-is-great that most engineers suffer from when asked to explain what they've come up with. Here's a quote from chapter 3's second paragraph to illustrate the point:

"When we talk about networking protocols in general it's important to understand the difference between specification and implementation."

Ummm, yes, if you are implementing the blasted thing. Not so much if you are a technical user of it. I knew I was in trouble after this point in the book.

So I excused myself, left the mountain cabin and took the cable car back into town. I hightailed it to the nearest bookstore and bought myself "Understanding IPv6, Second Edition" by Joseph Davies from Microsoft Press. Now here is a book that disposes off the obligatory IPv4 pros and cons in a couple of pages and gets to the meat of the matter in no time, i.e the actual workings of IPv6, its fields, their meanings and how they are used. As an added bonus, this book also does a great job of covering IPv6 transition options.

Buy "Understanding IPv6, Second Edition" and save your money. Or better, send me a postage paid book envelope and I'll send you my copy of "IPv6 Network Administration".
