Excellent guide to inventory demand management

I'm a software engineer who works on asset and inventory systems all day, and I've been doing it forever. Our products have always had inventory forecasting and ordering abilities (and they work!), but I've never really understood how they do what they do. I've seen webpages and such with formulas but without enough context to explain why the formulas are what they are. David Piasecki gives an excellent description of all of the elements in the excruciating detail that they deserve. (The chapter on a single variable, safety stock, runs 31 pages!)

He writes a a happy, occasionally silly style which makes it a good bedtime read. (Really, I did.) A minor complaint is that sometimes he gets too flip, tossing out irrelevant messages that detract from his point, such as when he confesses not knowing much about statistics in a book full of them. Still, they're not bad detours, and a book that should be tedious and ponderous is... can I say it... fun?

Good Introductory Book

This is a really good book to read to begin opening up your mind to the complexities of inventory management. However, the author does tend to go on tangents and give examples of what not to do first and then what you probably/maybe/should/could be doing after. I found this style of presenting the topics confusing at times. Not that I was expecting or hoping for the book to be too authoritative, since there are certainly endless nuances to inventory management based on countless factors. However, it would have been nice if the book could have been a little bit more concise with clearer examples. Essentially, I wish this book had fewer comedic antidotes and better detailed formulas (excel ones especially). I didn't purchase this book to be entertained, I purchased it because I wanted to learn.

Also, if you like to highlight the pages are very thin and the ink tends to be bleed through.

One of two books on my shelf with NO dust on it!

I bought this book three years ago when I moved into a supply leadership role at my company. One of the first things I did moving to a new division was implement a statistical safety stock model and process. Although the calculation we ultimately settled on was different, we used the methodology described in his book as our base. Same is true when we started building EOQ's into certain raw material product categories. As my team grew and competencies were added (Purchasing, Production Planning, Demand Planning/Forecasting), I found myself coming back to this book time and again. I like to make decisions defensible based on data and Piasecki helped me organize my thoughts and direct my team on organizing the data to build a business case for change. The logic is sound and well organized; I pull this book down off the shelf often to remind me HOW to explain these ideas to others.

If my 5 stars weren't enough to convince you to add this to your bookshelf, consider this... I gave this book 5 stars when I live in MN and the author in WI! Think about it... :-)

Over in the Meadow

This book gives a good introduction to the inhabitants of the meadow ecosystem. Not only are the illustrations darling, but the rhythm of the words and music make it hard not to tap one's toes. The kindergartners that I shared this with enjoyed it and some of them joined me in singing with the CD that came with the book. There are lots of discussion worthy topics in this book, everything from what an ecosystem is to how the different animals that live there each contribute to the environment. There is a small amount of additional information about each animal at the end of the book. The book also has great interactive potential as a call and response read-a-loud or as a creative drama activity starter. Highly recommended.

love this- the story and the rhymes are perfect to read along with a 3 year old. the illustrations are great, and then there's a whole segment describing all the creatures in the book that is very appropriate for children.

Perfect Easter Basket addition!

I like to include Easter and spring themed books in my children's Easter baskets. I already had some Easter books but went looking on Amazon for some additional animal/spring themed books, and stumbled across this one. I am a fan of the work that Jill McDonald has done for Pottery Barn Kids, Land of Nod, etc., so this was an instant "must have". We were NOT disappointed. My daughter LOVES the music that goes along with the book, and the illustrations/designs are vibrant, intricate and so fun for both child and parent. What a great addition to my daughter's library! This book has made me want to get other Jill McDonald books to add to our library, AND to track down other versions of this beautiful rhyme by other authors and illustrators.

IFSTA Essentials 6th Edition

There is a reason this is considered the "bible" of firefighting. IFSTA has been doing it longer then others and the quality of material shows it. As an instructor I've used and reviewed the other companies out there and I always go back to IFSTA. This book is an excellent choice for those getting into the fire service as well as those in the service looking to brush up. Highly recommend.

Truly covers the "essentials."

This book covers the basics as we teach new personnel in our fire agency. This is the bible we use for fire fighting at the basic functional level. You can delve deeper into some of the topics if desired, but this gives the basic recruit the knowledge and ability/practice to do the job safely and efficiently. Specialize later, but get the basics down first. I always learn something from the classes I teach, and this is the required text for my fire classes.

The strong investments into optical telecommunications in the late 1990s

resulted in a wealth of new research, techniques, component designs, and

understanding of polarization effects in fiber. Polarization Optics in

Telecommunications brings together recent advances in the field to create a

standard, practical reference for component designers and optical fiber

communication engineers. Beginning with a sound foundation in

electromagnetism, the author offers a dissertation of the spin-vector

formalism of polarization and the interaction of light with media.

Applications discussed include optical isolators, optical circulators,

fiber collimators, and a variety of applied waveplate and prism

combinations. Also included in an extended discussion of polarization-mode

dispersion (PMD) and polarization-dependent loss (PDL), their

representation, behavior, statistical properties, and measurement. This

book draws extensively from the technical and patent literature and is an

up-to-date reference for researchers and component designers in industry

and academia.

Comprehensive Treatment of Optical Communication

This is a superb study of electrodynamic theory as applied to polarization optics in todays (and tomorrow'a) telecommunication technology. As far as this review knows there is nothing like it available in the field. The book fills a very real need for those in the telecommunications field and for engineers and scientists who want to come up (or return) to speed in modern physical optics.

Polarization optics is being used routinely in communication systems, but there has been a need for workers and graduate students to have an entry (as well as an advanced) treatise on the subject. Damask's comprehensive stand-alone volume satisfies this need profoundly. In fact, due to its clear exposition of the frewquently complex material, the volume would make an outstanding text for a grad course in EE and physics. It is highly recommended.
