The knottiness of the Crow story makes this of limited appeal to general readers, except perhaps where Crow's influence is strongest--Texas, Atlanta, and the entire South. However, comprehensive business collections will want to include this for singular case study value.

A flawed but potentially useful book for those with an interest in real estate or entrepreneurs.

Trammell Crow, Master Builder: The Story of America’s Largest Real Estate Empire, by Robert Sobel, gets mixed reviews. The late Texas real estate developer is certainly worthy of a biography and, to be sure, author Sobel provides a good overview of the maverick businessman. But in other ways this biography falls short, so prospective purchasers should be aware of the strengths and weaknesses.

Let’s start with the good parts. Trammell Crow (1914-2009) led a Horatio Alger life, and Sobel does a good job in establishing why he became a legend. For example, Sobel takes the reader through Crow’s impoverished early years; teenage work experiences during the Great Depression; night school training to become a certified public accountant; wartime service as a U.S. Navy fiscal control officer and, by age 33, his ventures into real estate. So you as a reader get to learn who Trammell Crow was, and the attributes that enabled him to develop a huge real estate empire.

Despite the above-noted accomplishments, there are three significant problems that permeate the book. For one thing, there are very few first person accounts from co-workers, competitors, lenders or investors. The lack of interviews, original quotes, or presence of outsiders who might offer a different perspective of events, make this book a different read. Likewise, the minimal amount of factual data or detailed analysis of any major project or episode produces a narrative that borders on the superficial. So while the reader learns a little bit about Crow’s involvement in (e.g.) the Dallas Market Center, the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco and the Peachtree Center in Atlanta, there’s very little meat on the bones.

What I regard as the third failure no doubt derives from the relationship of the author to the story. As was properly disclosed in the Introduction, the author was hired by The Winthrop Group to write this book. While the author was apparently promised independence with regards to his opinions, his work was nonetheless vetted by his employer and a four-person management committee at the Trammell Crow Company. So while these two highly regarded companies were no doubt vigilant regarding factual accuracy, could such an arrangement assure scholarly independence? That becomes a concern because, at least in my mind, the narrative almost seems to been written for company stakeholders or other interested parties. That may sound harsh, but that’s how I regard it.

Despite the disappointments, students of business and anyone with an interest in real estate or entrepreneurship might find this book to be a useful source of information. And some might enjoy it more than I did. Rating this book isn’t easy, but after considerable soul searching I will give it three stars.

Entertaining Read_Good for Young RE Professionals in Dallas

This book is a fun and easy read that provides an indepth background pertaining to the commercial real estate market progession throughout the 20th century US and especially Dallas, TX. It describes Trammell's non traditional approach and how the company evolved from a random assortment of non-connected LLC's into a corporate institutional player.

Barnes explicitly warns against the trap that engagement at the required level can become obsessive and time consuming, and in a couple of nice vignettes he makes his point with wit and style. The New Author is a terrific companion for independent e-publishing and I recommend it.


There are at least three reasons why you might want to buy this book:

2. you have already written a novel and want to publish it as an ebook;

3. you want to promote yourself as an author.

This book is a beginner’s guide on how to do the above. It isn’t a magic elixir for foolproof million copy marketing of your ebook. It is based upon the experiences of this author and a broad-based peer group.

The scope of this edition is deliberately limited to basic novel writing guidelines, first practical steps in building and operating a social media platform for authors, and the process of epublishing a novel on Amazon KDP and other market channels via Smashwords. A list of recommended further reading is provided that covers the subject matter, should readers wish to delve deeper into these areas.

This edition of The New Author does not contain a method approach to novel writing, advice on publishing in print or a prescriptive ‘silver bullet’ approach to ebook marketing.

The internet is a labyrinth of blogs, websites and web-based tools. User interfaces are constantly being improved, upgraded and changed. No screenshots have been included in this book in order to avoid early obsolescence and to keep the format and page display simple and readable. Truly helpful for the new and not so new author

This is an excellent Kindle ebook that really is written for the new author and will be immensely helpful to him or her. The whole process of writing a novel is covered, from start to finish (including how to format and publish on Kindle and Smashwords).

There are many ebooks on Kindle about how to write a novel, but it's not uncommon to come across some so badly written and edited that it's plain they won't be of any use to wannabe writers. In fact, their writers themselves need to consult a far better book on their own topic. And here is one for them now.

Not only is The New Author extremely well written by someone who knows what he's talking about, but the tone is also truly heartening for those who yearn to become published writers but just don't know where to start.

The writer doesn't attempt to go into writing technique in any great detail, but he provides an excellent summing up of the considerations to be borne in mind when embarking on a story, and also recommends other resources which go deeper into particular areas of technique.

Along with the revolution in publishing has come one in marketing, and the title The New Author can be taken to have a double meaning: it can refer not just to someone who aims to become an author for the first time, but also to the new online world with which more experienced authors must now become familiar. So the large section on marketing a novel online through social media and other methods is particularly relevant and welcome for authors at all stages of their careers.

After exploring the mad and slightly confusing aspects of self publishing, I was given 'The New Author' in an attempt to try and clarify all the 'whys and wherefores'. And it did! Other books I found very dry and left me feeling I was outside the head's office for being stupid. Ruby's way was a breath of fresh air. It was clear, informative and funny. He admits his own mistakes so you don't have to. It's a book you can dip in and out of, especially when it comes to promoting yourself. Technophobes need not apply or learn damn quick!
I would recommend this book to writers/authors willing to put themselves out there and a liking for turnips...

Probably the best one-stop shop for the indie author

There are swathes of books offering advice to the aspiring author about to launch his/her book onto the e-market, ranging from the excellent (David Gaughran's 'Let's Get Digital') to the rather glib and opportunistic (John Locke's one). Few have provided such a broad yet sufficiently deep introduction as this one. Ruby Barnes, a successful ebook author in his own right (and therefore someone who knows what he's talking about) takes the reader through every step of the process of producing, publishing and marketing an ebook, offering his personal experiences with regard to what seems to work and what doesn't. It's all done with a good deal of wry and at times earthy humour, something that's often lacking in this kind of book.

This won't of itself make a bestselling author out of you. It might not even make you a success. But it's the sort of book I wish I'd taken the trouble to seek out and read before I embarked on my own epublishing journey. It guides you between the pitfalls so that you at least stand a chance.

Disorganized

This book is very hard to follow in my opinion.
The main problem is that the actual information is lost in the middle of plenty of examples making it very hard for the student to synthesize the topic. To make matter worse, the example seems to stick out more that the remaining of the text due to too much colors in the titles. Most of the text of each chapter could fit in just a couple pages highlighted by a couple of judicious examples and demonstrations.

Very well done

Any homebrewer that enjoys making and drinking pale ales needs this book. As an avid reader of the Classic Beer Styles Series, I feel that the author has taken some of the best aspects of the previous 15 books and combined it all into one, making this one of the most useful in the series. The second edition of the book is a tremendous improvement over the first.
The book is longer than most of the others in the series, but only because the author broke the pale ale category into many subcategories. He does not discriminate - he explains all pretty much equally. The recipes are different and thoroughly presented; the method of dispensing each is even specified. All in all, a very useful reference for the homebrewer.

A Well-done book on the Topic

Terry Foster's "Pale Ale" is to be commended for it's excellent treatment of this historical style of beer, and it can be recommended both to the style's homebrewers and enthusiasts.

Foster writes about the history of pale ale with verve. This section shines among all the others. I know of no source that is more informative nor more engrossing on the subject of the history of this beer, or even english beer in general (though I have not read any other books in this series.) Foster not only explains the evolution of pale ale in isolation, but also its relationship with other beers that have been its commercial rivals through out history.

Foster is a clear advocate of the British Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and shows his CAMRA biases. But this bias never taints a candid discussion of Pale Ale as discovered both in England and the U.S. Indeed, as an American with no experience with Real Ale, I quite enjoyed his discussion of Real Ale: while reading, I more than once considered how to brew and (especially) to serve a bitter in the "real" way--a subject which he discusses in some detail. In addition, Foster is an open advocate of innovation--never does he scold the brewer who wants to innovate on this classic style, though he does warn against calling serious deviations "Pale Ales", something he considers both harmful and misleading.

Homebrewers with a great deal of experience with pale ales will not find themselves learning a great deal that's new about pale ale brewing. The book is not intended for those with no experience brewing: if you are trying to learn to brew for the first time, get Charlie Papzian's "Complete Joy of Homebrewing" or John J. Palmer's "How to Brew". In general, I found the chapter on Brewing Pale Ales to be pretty standard. This book won't tell you anything about making a pale ale if you've already absorbed Ray Daniel's "Designing Great Beer." On the other hand, those with a few but not many homebrews to their credit and with a zeal for developing their own recipes will likely find themselves inspired with new ideas after reading this book. (However, I would really recommend Designing Great Beer first.)

The book contains recipes, one for each sub-style in the pale ale family, but the book emphasizes recipe creation over delivering recipes. None of the recipes are purported "clones." All the recipes have both extract and all-grain versions. I haven't tried the recipes but all look as though they will produce good pale ales. However, the recipes section of the book is short, a fact for which this reviewer was grateful, but those seeking a tomb of recipes should look elsewhere.

This is a very well done book on beer. Regarding the history of pale ale and it's serving, it surpasses all other works I know. On the other topics it covers, it rivals the competition as far as pale ale is concerned. Why not five stars? Well, I feel that the section on brewing pale ale could have been considerably more probing. That chapter didn't go beyond Daniel's Designing Great Beers and I felt as though that should have been a possibility, indeed a reality, in a book dedicated to Pale Ale.

You will be getting good information on Hops, both varieties and flavor characteristics, and malts, their flavor and color contributions. Terry Foster does an excellent job of explaining the science behind ale brewing which is applicable to most styles of brewing.

Mikhail Gorbachev is a former Soviet statesman. He was the final leader of the Soviet Union, having served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, and as the country's head of state from 1988 until its dissolution in 1991. Gorbachev's policies of openness and restructuring as well as summit conferences with President Ronald Reagan contributed to the end of the Cold War. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.

Finally, a thorough photographic document of Chernobyl

As a passionate photo book collector and history junkie, I find this book to be one of the most impressive of my countless purchases in recent memory. I own several other photo books on Chernobyl, and know many photographers have covered this subject, but none match the shear scope and quality of Gerd Ludwig's 20 year retrospective masterpiece.

Mr. Ludwig's powerful photographs of the devastating consequences of the meltdown are as informative as they are artful, and as heart wrenching, as they are jaw-dropping. While the images of the ghost town and the exclusion zone are haunting, the images of the victims and elderly residents in the zone show the human side of the tragedy with such honesty and empathy. His photos from deep inside the reactor are like no other - especially the image of the frozen clock inside the reactor - what a shot! I get the feeling that he lives and breathes this subject, and has taken a lot of risks, both emotionally and physically over the last 20 years.

The printing and layout of the book are equally impressive. First off, hold it with two hands - the book is large, thick, and wow is it heavy! At 250 pages, with a hard cover, and a sturdy slipcase, this is a true art object. The paper is a fine satin finish, and the beautifully printed color images really pop off the page. As soon as I picked up the book, I could tell that this is a quality European style photo book - not some cheap flimsy thing printed in China without any input by the author.

There is also a lot of research and information in the book. The essay by Mikhail Gorbachev brought the entire disaster into a new light for me, as I had never considered the political consequences. The introduction by Gerd helps to explain the nuances of the story and give you a feeling for what it was like for him to shoot in the zone, plus the detailed captions give further context to each photograph. Bravo for giving the readers intelligent background information!

Also of note, is the cover of the book itself. Inside the slipcase, with his famous photograph of the workers wearing gas masks inside the reactor, is a very simple cover, showing the Soviet's press announcement of the disaster as it was happening. It is a chilling warning to the images that come. The following quotes from the book, Voices From Chernobyl, add to this feeling as well. That book by the way, is also a must-read (I had tears reading many of the first hand accounts of the disaster).

Altogether, I'm thoroughly honored to have this book in my collection. I'm glad I took the extra time to track Mr. Ludwig down and buy a signed copy too, totally worth the few extra bucks and it certainly adds value to me. I can't wait to catch an exhibition of this work someday!

I've been following Gerd's work for a long time and am truly impressed with this, his latest book. From the introduction essay by Gorbachev to his most recent work at Chernobyl, stunning photos lead you through a roller coaster of history and emotion that continues on to today.

The book itself is well made and the attention to color and detail is beautiful. The binding is strong, with heavy paper stock, its a solid book.

Overall, it's one of those truly rare and stunning books that captures not just a moment or a singular story, but a collective history we can't bear to forget.

The photographs in this book simply must be witnessed. They strike you just as a powerful blow to your gut might, or a stunning blow to your brain. They will empty your lungs and figuratively split your scull. When Oppenheimer witnessed the first nuclear explosion he remarked that it brought to mind the words from the Bhagavad Gita "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." These photographs lift the mask on that dark side in a way never before seen. And even at that, as Mikhail Gorbachev writes in the introduction, "One could now imagine much more clearly what might happen if a nuclear bomb exploded. So broad and shallow that it has limited value

With a good editor, this could be a good book.

But as is, it covers too many topics, from how to deal with computer viruses (keep your software updated, use an anti-virus program) to warnings about scurvy ('always aim for a balanced diet'). There are pages devoted to wood-boring insects. There's an illustration of a Corgi.

Worse, the book is shallow in its investigation of useful options. For emergency winter survival, it's odd to recommend an igloo (slow to make, hard to construct without a snow saw, and tough to complete in poor conditions) but to omit mention of a snow trench (fast, easy, and warm enough to shelter me on many trips), or even a snow-cave, a simple compromise.

And the information shared has no filter. A beginner has no way of parsing the laundry-list of knots to prioritize a square knot (essential) over a Killick hitch (easily replaced by more versatile alternatives); there's no mention at all of how to make an improvised harness, despite several sections on emergency climbing and rappelling. In the section in explosions, Wiseman advises ways to safely exit a building before the spread of fire, but then says 'If you are caught in an explosion in a building, then stay there until safe to do so' [sic], without further explanation.

Finally, it's unreliable. There are pure factual errors (people cannot survive 12 days without water, even in cool temperatures) and frequent mixing of good and poor advice (crossing a river in a group one behind the other is terrible, exposing each to the full force of the water, while crossing in a line facing downstream, with arms interwoven, is universally recommended).

I don't write many reviews, and even fewer poor reviews - why disparage something others enjoyed? But this is meant to be a practical book, and it sets the bar too low. Pare it down and keep the information accurate. At half the length this could be twice as valuable.

Here are links to better books on the areas discussed. I know too little about bushcraft and trapping to recommend one there - any suggestions appreciated.

If you just want information on snow caves (another better alternative to an igloo), Ernest Wilkinson's slim book is out-of-print but easy to find:

For glacier travel, crevasse rescue, and high-angle rescue in general, Andy Selter's book is remarkably efficient. A few pages go a long way on each topic:

For emergency wilderness medicine, Eric Weiss' books are the most popular, and they're fine. But I prefer Buck Tilton's, in part because I did my Wilderness EMT training with him, but also for their concise explanations. Here's his most comprehensive:

Best survival book ever made

This book to me is one of the most important books in my library. Just like he said in his introduction the world is changing and with change their is always danger around the corner to challenge our survival instinct. I never gave learning survival skills a second thought but now having a family I wonder what I could do if we were put in a situation that threatened us such as natural and man-made disasters or if I went camping in the woods and got lost. I went searching on the web and came across this book and I'm glad I purchased it ( I also purchased build the perfect bug out bag by creek Stewart which I also give 5 stars). The third edition of the sas survival handbook covers wilderness survival skills such as:
- preparedness
- survival kit, pouch and knife
- survival in different climates such as mountains, polar regions, islands, deserts and tropical regions
- food such as how to catch and cook animals, how to identify what plants to eat and what to avoid etc
- how to make a fire with what's around you
- how to make tools
- navigating with or without maps
- surviving at sea
- first aid etc
There is heaps of information that a novice like me can understand. Their is also a section on urban survival which covers self-defence, protecting your family and home and what to do when disaster hits your city. This book is very comprehensive and I recomened this book for everyone it is handy to keep in the house and defently a book to read here and there and it's something to practice because learning even the basic survival skills is a important skill in life.

Good book, but bad binding.

Great information in the book. It would be a 5 star if not for the poor construction of the 2 that I ordered. Upon FIRST opening of the copy I received and the replacement copy, the binding snapped. Sections detached from the binding and are coming out. The information is robust and easy to understand.

Excellent introduction to the world of Pokemon

I bought this book for my 7 years old son with his first Pokemon deck, and started reading it during my flight from Sydney to Cairo. It was very interesting to the extent that I finished it all in one shot. It is truly one of the most wonderfully illustrated book I have ever seen. It helped me a lot to understand the Pokemon phenomenon and communicate with my son. It helped him also to share the Pokemon fun with his peers. The CD, which comes with the book, is excellent for both learning as well as practicing the game, and deserves the price itself.

The book was defected upon arrival. Was not new; looked used. Front cover ripped from the corner to the middle and bottom corners wrinkled and worn. Arrived on time. Unsatisfied, it was supposed to be a Christmas gift and now I cannot use it for that because it is so damaged

I was an F student in college, so my textbooks collected a lot of dust. Had this book been around back then it might have been a different story.

Hands down, this is the single best textbook about social media marketing out there. This radically revised and fully updated edition is even more comprehensive, strategic, organized, visual, results-oriented and innovative than the first. If you teach or study social media marketing or digital marketing, then you need this book! (Robert V. Kozinets)

About the Author
Tracy L. Tuten, Ph.D., is Professor of Marketing at East Carolina University where she teaches social media marketing and advertising. Her first book, Advertising 2.0: Social Media Marketing in a Web 2.0 World, was followed by others on using social media and digital marketing for the enterprise, and the book, Advertisers at Work, which features interviews with luminaries in the field. Dr. Tuten’s publications have appeared in such journals as Journal of Marketing Communications, Psychology & Marketing, and Journal of Business Research. Prior to her appointment at ECU, she taught at Longwood University and at Virginia Commonwealth University, where her research efforts were recognized with VCU’s Excellence in Scholarship award. A two-time Fulbright Scholar, she speaks all over the world on marketing topics. She’s been recognized with teaching awards at her respective institutions and with national awards, such as the O’Hara Leadership Award in Direct & Interactive Marketing Education. The best social media marketing textbook available

There are a number of books available on this topic but I have found that Social Media Marketing may be the best! I have used this book as the text for teaching a social media marketing course at a major university on three occasions. This is a great read, full of examples and information that is valuable to the reader (in my case, students) who are eager to learn more about how marketers can leverage and benefit from using social media. In particular, there is a solid outline on how to create a social media marketing plan. Again, very valuable and this template may be applied from small to mid-size businesses to an enterprise. Students have made very positive comments on Social Media Marketing 2nd edition, and found it to be very useful in developing social media marketing plans. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who needs to learn how to leverage social media.

This textbook is not nearly as bad as the dozens of others that I have had to use in the past. Rather than just throwing information out at you in a dull, linear fashion it ties the material together with pop culture examples to help connect the what we're learning to the real world. Even the info itself is written in a more natural and fun way than the standard textbook. I'm only giving it 4 stars because at the end of the day it's still a textbook, so it's in my blood to have some sort of dislike for it.

Inspiring Text

If you are a social media novice, this is a great educator to how and why it works in your favor. If I had more time, I would read it outside of the bare minimal that I need to complete assignments in my online Social Media Marketing course. The chapters are brief and it is lightweight. If you are short on time and you are allowed open book tests, the end of chapter summaries are a great overview of the chapter without having to read each chapter in entirety.
