Helpful, methodical

The book's title is accurate: "Data Governance Tools" focuses on data-governance-enabling technology, and walks through a structured list of data-governance-related tasks and processes, showing (with one or a few commented screen shots per case) how task X is implemented in software product A.

IBM's InfoSphere product family gets the most coverage, followed by Informatica tools, and Collibra and Talend share the bronze medal. At the other extreme, Microsoft is a no-show, and SAS gets less than a page. As advertised, the book covers the "big data" angle, by talking about Hadoop and even mentions data streams.

The "task list" is very useful of itself, by making one aware of what goes into data governance. The illustrations make the discussion concrete, and, obviously, tell the reader - a CTO, perhaps - that data-governance-related task X, which he just read about, can be automated using software product A, while task Y is handled by software product B.

What the CTO will not be able to get from "Data Governance Tools", however, is guidance on whether B can also do X, or whether A can do Y. (Appropriately, the subtitle promises "evaluation criteria", not feature-comparison checklists). I think one can be pardoned for calling a "Data Governance Tools" a synthesis exercise that is a step above a collage of software products' marketing-copy snippets and screen shots. Nonetheless, I appreciate "Data Governance Tools" as a useful, substantial read.

Everyone who is interested in the astrology of India is going to want this gorgeously illustrated two-volume set by James Kelleher. It's a gold mine of information, much of which is completely new to most Western students. Like other introductions to Vedic astrology, Path of Light explains the signs, houses, and aspects that Hindu practitioners use. What makes these volumes different, however, is the exciting additional material they contain, such as an invaluable section on the nakshatras (Hindu lunar mansions), which relates the ancient myths associated with these important stars. I was also thrilled to find detailed information about the 36 drekkanas, some of the important subdivisions of the Hindu horoscope, which are too often neglected in Vedic readings in the West. Beautiful illustrations of the nakshatras and drekkanas - many in full color - accompany the text. The artwork is enormously helpful for readers who want to memorize these stellar divisions and the stories associated with them. But once you have the basics down, how do you put together an insightful reading that will actually help your clients? Kelleher addresses the major issues clients ask about (health, career, relationships, children, etc.) and shows you where to look for practical answers in the Vedic horoscope and its subdivisions. Some of the most entertaining portions of the books are Kelleher's descriptions of his travels through the India meeting with astrologers and saints. His personal experiences bring Hindu astrology to life for readers who haven't had a chance to visit the subcontinent yet. Kelleher is a co-founder of the American Council of Vedic Astrology and an adjunct professor of Astrology at Hindu University in Orlando, Florida. He has been a student of the eminent Vedic astrologer M. K. Gandhi since 1975, and he has won honors in India in his own right, receiving the prestigious Jyotish Kovid and Jyotish Vachaspati awards from the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences. About the Author
Author of the recently published two-volume book, Path of light, James Kelleher is a co-founder of the American Council of Vedic Astrology. He received his initial training in India and worked for five years in London as the personal assistant to the world-renowned Jyotishi, M. K. Ghandhi. He then returned to the United States where he has been consulting, lecturing, and teaching Vedic Astrology since 1984. He is one of the primary founders of the American Council of Vedic Astrology and the American College of Vedic Astrology. He is an adjunct professor of Jyotish at Hindu University of America. He has been awarded the titles of Jyotish Kovid and Jyotish Vachapasti, by the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences. He also maintains a busy private practice in Los Gatos, CA.

Path of Light Review

Path of Light (both volumes) is probably the best book I have read on Vedic Astrology. I have read many jyotish books, but this one is unique. It is very clear that James Kelleher has taken a great deal of time and energy in producing this physically beautiful, well-written classic. Volume one sets the stage by fleshing out all of the basic symbolism necessary for chart interpretation. It covers the planets, signs, houses and nakshatras in depth. I particularly like the way he presents the stories related to each nakshatra, as well as the fantastic, original paintings of the nakshatras. Volume two gives a clear and effective method of chart interpretation that shows how to interpret the various domains of life, using an abundance of interesting chart examples. Mr. Kelleher's method for using of vargas, has really helped me understand how to use them, and has totally changed how I look at charts. I absolutely loved both of these books and would recommend them to anyone seriously interested in Jyotish.

Excellent Book Borne Out of Years Of Experience

If you want a theoritical book that is academeic, look elsewhere. If you want a book written by an excellent vedic astrologer who generously shares his more than 20 years of experience, buy this and Vol 2. Vol 1 puts down an excellent foundation. The sections on Nakshatras is especially revealing. Vol 2 goes in to Varga analysis which is simply Superb. Vol 2 is simply the best book I have read in Vedic Astrology on Varga analysis. The spiritual stories interspersed is icing on the cake. In my opinion these two books are a MUST for any serious student of Jyotish. The techniques are powerful enough for you to try on your sample charts and come away astonished. In Vol 1 I was especially impressed with the balanced approach to the dushthana houses (they are not all gloomy). Relationship analysis using Venus/Mars placements is also superb. Buy these books, you will NOT regret it.

Easily one of the best books on the subject

James Kelleher's "Path of Light" volumes are a worthy and important contribution to Vedic Astrology by a man who has devoted over thirty years of his life to its study and practice. Beginning with the end, his Bibliography is an impressive list of the well and not-so-well known classics of Vedic Astrology that James sources, alongside an equally impressive list of modern authors and their works. To reach for the stars, you have to stand on the shoulders of giants, and James has clearly done his homework and paid his dues. And while there is plenty to love about this book, I will list briefly what makes it one of a kind, and a must-have for beginning, intermediate, and even advanced students of Jyotisha. Some books have some of these features, but none that I know have all of them:

1. Compelling list of Drekkanas and some of their practical applications, based on research and years of trial & error.

2. A guided tour through the subcharts that comprehends classic as well as modern techniques (from Parashara to Iyer, and everyone in between)

3. A practical depiction of the Nakshatras and their uses, including techniques by Satyacharya and others.

4. Detailed lists of Planet & House combinations. Unlike other "cookbooks" that disempower you by listing such combos, James has a knack for making his delineations insightful and instructive, so that you actually learn from reading them. My guess is this is because he is not parroting what other authors have written, but injecting his own experience from real-life charts.

5. James opens up his teachings in audio/visual presentations at jameskelleher.com which serve to bolster the information in his books.

6. Discussion of topics not normally found in other "serious" Jyotisha books, such as what kind of pets, vehicles, and residences a chart indicates

7. Finally, my favorite part... the "Author's Journal"... biographical sketches between chapters that give us a window, an insight into James' life & experiences in India, as a student and practitioner, as a spiritual seeker and just an everyday guy traipsing across continents in the service of his art. In an era when so many Vedic Astrologers are closed and guarded, their methods restricted to an 'elite' few, their reputations at stake, James puts it all on the line and shares his insights with candor and humility. Many of us, students and teachers, would do well to follow his example.

These are but a few of the treasures contained in "Path of Light" Volumes 1&2. Highly recommended reading... even advanced Jyotishis will learn much, if their minds are open.

About the Author

Al Anderson is the Director of IT Support Services at Salish Kootenai College. He holds an Associates of Science in Computer Science and is near completing of Bachelors of Science in Computer Engineering. He has 10+ years of college teaching experience in Programming, Networking, and Desktop Publishing, and 15+ years experience in creating, editing, and formatting various documents including pamphlets, catalogs, and manuals. Al has produced a 3-8 hour video series for the Virtual Training Company including Ruby on Rails, REALbasic, and Programming Ruby. In addition, he has built many production applications including a Learning ManagementSystem in use by Salish Kootenai College, a Ruby-on-Rails issue-tracking help desk application, and a Mac OS X Cocoa Airport Wireless Utility.

Ryan Benedetti holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from the University of Montana and teaches in the Liberal Arts Department at Salish Kootenai College (SKC) on the Flathead Indian Reservation.

For seven years, Ryan served as Department Head for Information Technology and Computer Engineering at SKC. Prior to that, he worked as editor and information systems specialist for a river, stream, and wetland research program in the School of Forestry at the University of Montana.

Ryan's poems have been published in Cut Bank and Andrei Codrescu's Exquisite Corpse. He loves cartooning, playing blues harmonica, making Flash learning toys, and practicing zazen. He spends his best moments with his wife, daughter, and son in the Mission Mountain Valley of Montana.

disappointing and frustrating

I wanted to like this, but I think that it fails to cover its subject, fails to be useful for most people, and needs more careful editing. Overall, the book presents the networking material very slowly, but confusingly. The cute examples are distracting and often fail to illustrate the topics.
It spends many pages on basic undergrad comp sci mechanics that are neither necessary nor useful in building and maintaining a network, and rarely in troubleshooting network problems.
The text and exercises refer to material that has not been presented yet. I often had to look ahead a few pages to find a definition. A couple of the solutions appear to be wrong, or are not explained enough to understand.
Several times, the book suggests that something is possible, but does not tell how to do it. Often the discussion is limited to Cisco specifics and fails to address other equipment that a new networker might encounter.
Suggestions for improvement:
- thorough editing
- a straightforward summary at the end of each chapter
- an appendix of the common maintenance and diagnostic tools

Doesn't really explain much networking!

I hold a CCNP and work in Network Engineering. Recently I managed to take a look at a copy of this book. It's a good introduction to physical connections, though perhaps too much of the book is spent on this topic. It falls flat on anything you might want to do with your network connected up, though.

This book discusses the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) a few times. While it might be a good introduction if you're thinking of going into the CCNA having never worked on a network before, it is not a CCNA, or even pre-CCNA book. It is a good overview of the physical layer.

My major issues with this book are: the old technologies and glossing over of upper layer network functions. In terms of technology, there's a fairly long section on coaxial network connections (10Base2). While you might come across it in "the field," it's a fairly esoteric technology now. Furthermore, the router shown in the book is so old that CCNA-goers don't even buy them for practice anymore! I have a feeling the IT prof that wrote this book has never actually configured a router (at least not in the last 20 years).

The router image is actually confusing because of its age (and the error in the diagram doesn't help). It shows a Cisco 2500 series router (OLD) with two "fast ethernet (feth)" ports. Unfortunately the arrows to the ethernet ports are actually going to "Serial" ports (as you can just barely make out on the router). This is confusing because the Console port actually does look like what most know as an ethernet port. The actual ethernet connections on this router are an old style AUI port (not described in this diagram). The take-away of this is that it's entirely confusing to the beginner.

The book barely discusses switching and routing. The descriptions are good, and some of the lower-level switching layer is described well. There is no discussion about how switches communicate to each other - I don't think switching loops (an important CCNA-level concept) are even mentioned. TCP/IP (how packets are used to talk from computer to computer) is described, but also oversimplified.

The routing protocol described (RIP) is old technology, though still useful, but it's over simplified. The difference between "Distance Vector" and "link-state" protocols is not described (nor do those terms show up in this book). Worst of all, they point you in the direction of the RFCs if you want to learn more about common protocols like OSPF and BGP! These highly technical references might be useful if you're already an engineer, but are probably the worst possible reference for a beginner.

Summing up, buy this book if you've never seen or used a network before. If you're starting your first job as a tech or interning for a network engineer, this might be a good intro. If you're looking for CCNA resources, you're probably already well past this book. I would not have been pleased had I purchased this book even before I started working toward my CCNA.

Book needs revisions and edits

I read to this book to gain an overview and survey of networking. I know more than most people when it comes to computers, but I certainly wouldn't consider myself an expert. I like computers. I've taken some college classes on them and I seem to have an aptitude for them. I set up my home network, but that was the extent of my practical experience. I've been considering formally studying "Network Administration," so I read this book to gain an introduction.

The book says it's for people who "need to learn networking for a job, for a class (like CCNA), or just because you think it's about time you learned the difference between a switch and a router". So this book seemed like it would be a good fit for me.

To briefly cover the book's contents, the chapter subjects include 1) Fixing Physical Networks, 2)Planning Network Layouts, 3) Tools and Troubleshooting 4) Packet Analysis 5)Network Devices and Traffic 6)Connecting Networks with Routers 7)Routing Protocols 8)The Domain Name System 9)Monitoring and Troubleshooting 10) Wireless Networking 11)Network Security 12)Designing Networks. The topics are covered over 500 black and white pages.

I'll start out with the things I enjoyed with this book.

-The book is aesthetically pleasing. In the 500 pages, I would guess about half of the book is white space and pictures. The pictures are either goofy people or computer parts. It makes the book more digestible and approachable. I believe this is the standard style for the "Head First" series.

-The book is not boring. It's designed as a learning tool as opposed to a reference book. It explains concepts while asking the reader to do written exercises on every couple pages. The exercises go along with a silly story. For example, in chapter 1, you are helping "Coconut Airways" fix their network. Problems keep arising as the story progresses so you learn more and more about what is wrong.

-The book explains concepts creatively. For example, one reoccurring feature is an interview or conversation between two pieces of networking hardware or software. It helps emphasize their functions and differences.

Stuff I don't like:

-Many of the exercises in the book are faulty. It wasn't uncommon to come to an exercise page and not have an idea what is being asked. They often asked questions about material that was not even mentioned yet. For example, on page 309, you are to match various acronyms with their functions. How am I supposed to know what "SOA", "CNAME" or "IN" do if they weren't even referred to before the exercises?

-I must have run into at least five typos throughout the book. For example, on page 174, "connection" is spelled "connetion". On page 231, it reads "The can also" instead of "They can also". On another page, "You're" is spelled "your". One typo in a published book may be acceptable, but many really undermine its credibility. I certainly wasn't looking for errors. If I'm the one who caught these simple errors, how do I know the technical details are correct?

-I'm not sure I read much, if anything, on the OSI model. Before this book, I didn't know much about networking, but I know everyone who has taken a networking class knows about the OSI model. It's the very important theoretical basis of networking. But it's not even in the book's index. It makes me wonder what other vital information was left out?

-The writing is often cleaver and fun, but it is too often unclear. I know it's tough to explain technical concepts, but I would guess 1/3 of the book left me scratching my head for clarification. I often had to supplement the pages by looking up terms or context on the internet. Too often, unreasonable assumptions were made about the reader's knowledge.

In Conclusion:

Throughout reading the book, I frequently got the impression that this book was a draft that was rushed to print. This book is in its first edition and it shows. It should have been more thoroughly reviewed by its target audience before being sent to production. At the same time, I don't regret reading this book. After all, I did learn a great deal. I just had to constantly supplement and fact check the book with other resources to make sense of it all.

I suggest you take its faults into consideration before reading the first edition of Head First Networking.

Chosen as a Diplomate of the American Psychotherapy Association, Dr. Jay serves on several national boards that promote wellness and enhanced human performance in corporate America and is a sought after trainer and consultant. Beyond Thoughtful--A Captivating Account of Love Renewed

This soul-bearing account of infidelity, love lost, and love renewed is a demonstration of possibilities beyond anything normally imagined in a situation where a couple are in the tangled mess created when egos take over judgment. You've got to give it to the authors. They told this story with amazing candor and astute awareness, and they generously did it in the spirit of helping others who might face a similar marriage crisis. I read the book in two days as I could hardly put it down, and I gained an understanding of the unfortunate motivations behind a betrayal as well as the power of a love that does not give up. Both authors demonstrate an amazing and exceptional aptitude for growth and self-awareness. I salute them and hope others will learn from their experiences and be Surprised by Love.

A captivating feature of this book is that at each stage of the story, both the husband's and the wife's perspectives are revealed. It is incredibly intriguing to get into the minds of what each was thinking as the marriage crisis unfolded and played itself out. The fact the the husband, Jay, is a professional in the field of psychology yields an in-depth level of analysis that is rare and thought provoking. The wife, Julie's, strength and capacity for forgiveness is beyond the norm, and it is the key to the redemption of the marriage. Jay humbly and graciously gives her credit for that. Although she was moving on with her life with determination and fortitude and her future prospects were good, she never lost the love and she behaved in ways that fostered renewal. Even if you have never experienced infidelity, you will relate to these people. You gotta love this story.

Highly recommended for ALL married couples!

After having difficulty following my husband's return from a deployment, I read this book. It changed the way I look at my husband and also marriage in general. Although we did not face infidelity, we had been a part for so long that we did not feel like a married couple when he returned. Although my story is different from the Ferraro's, I could relate to the emotional roller coaster the ups and downs of a marriage can take you on. It was comforting to know I was not the only one who has ever felt these emotions. I learned from their story about trust, love and putting each other first. Love is not always easy but this book will help you see why love is worth the hard times you might face. I still refer back to this book when facing difficult times in my marriage. I highly recommend this book to ALL married couples! It will give you a new perspective to what marriage really is.

Not impressed at this stage. Don't waste your money if you want some positive approaches to improving your relationship

I only bought this book today. I am halfway through it and am deeply disturbed. Currently my marriage of 38 years is under threat because I have recently discovered that my husband and only ever sexual partner has been acing an affair with a friend for the past four years. Living a double life of deceit and lies. We have been together for 43 years since I was 16. I am devastated. However there is an intent to try and rebuild something maybe. I bought the book after googling how to repair a marriage after infidelity. I have to say that so far all I feel is unutterably depressed. Ths guy "Dr Jay" is a self centred egocentric pig and I do not feel the slightest bit assisted in trying to put my relationship back together at this stage - simply depressed at the awefulness of how totally selfish a husband can be. Maybe it gets better in the second half. But if you are freshly vulnerable from some arsehole letting you down - so far this book will only make you feel worse. Maybe in another year or so when the hurts have reduced - but definitely not for the early stages. Not impressed so far.
