Good textbook with good information. Very detailed. My only complaint: text isn't really broken up with pictures, graphs, or other images; just constant text. But that text is thorough and in depth. Really explains the theories well. Good for mid-level college criminology course, or someone looking to get a reference for theory.

I was assigned the book for my group dynamics class. I didn't wanna pay a lot for the book so this was a great deal for me. I am college student and cheaper books are great books. This is the 10th edition. My professor said the newer one and the older ones are the same. Don't waste your money on a more expensive book. This was a great buy !

About the Author
Wayne Petherick is Associate Professor of Criminology at Bond University in Australia. Wayne’s areas of interest include forensic criminology, forensic victimology, criminal motivations, criminal profiling, and applied crime analysis. He has worked on risk and threat cases, a mass homicide, stalking, rape, and a variety of civil suits involving premises liability and crime prevention. He has presented to audiences in Australia and abroad, and has published in a variety of areas including social science and legal works in the areas of criminal profiling, expert evidence, stalking, serial crimes, criminal motivations, and victimology. Wayne is co-editor of Forensic Criminology, and editor of Profiling and Serial Crime: Theoretical and Practical Issues, now in its third edition.

Brent E. Turvey spent his first years in college on a pre-med track only to change his course of study once his true interests took hold. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Portland State University in Psychology, with an emphasis on Forensic Psychology, and an additional Bachelor of Science degree in History. He went on to receive his Masters of Science in Forensic Science after studying at the University of New Haven, in West Haven, Connecticut.

Since graduating in 1996, Brent has consulted with many agencies, attorneys, and police departments in the United States, Australia, China, Canada, Barbados and Korea on a range of rapes, homicides, and serial/ multiple rape/ death cases, as a forensic scientist and criminal profiler. He has also been court qualified as an expert in the areas of criminal profiling, forensic science, victimology, and crime reconstruction. In August of 2002, he was invited by the Chinese People's Police Security University (CPPSU) in Beijing to lecture before groups of detectives at the Beijing, Wuhan, Hanzou, and Shanghai police bureaus. In 2005, he was invited back to China again, to lecture at the CPPSU, and to the police in Beijing and Xian - after the translation of the 2nd edition of his text into Chinese for the University. In 2007, he was invited to lecture at the 1st Behavioral Sciences Conference at the Home Team (Police) Academy in Singapore, where he also provided training to their Behavioral Science Unit. In 2012 Brent completed his PhD in Criminology from Bond University in Gold Coast, Australia.

He is the author of Criminal Profiling: An Introduction to Behavioral Evidence Analysis, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Editions (1999, 2002, 2008, 2011); co- author of the Rape Investigation Handbook, 1st and 2nd Editions (2004, 2011), Crime Reconstruction 1st and 2nd Editions (2006, 2011), Forensic Victimology (2008) and Forensic Fraud (2013) - all with Elsevier Science. He is currently a full partner, Forensic Scientist, Criminal Profiler, and Instructor with Forensic Solutions, LLC, and an Adjunct Professor of Justice Studies at Oklahoma City University. Claire Ferguson holds her Bachelor of Arts degree in Honours Psychology from the University of Western Ontario in Canada and a Masters of Criminology from Bond University in Australia. She is currently a Doctoral Candidate in the Criminology Department at Bond University where she is studying staged crime scenes. Claire worked for St. Leonard's Society in 2006, writing a narrative to be used for training purposes about homicide cases. In 2007, she undertook an internship with Queensland Fire and Rescue in the Fire Investigation Unit. She completed a crime scene analysis internship with Forensic Solutions in 2008. "Candy Jones" was the stage name of Jessica Wilcox (b. 1921) who became famous as a model and "pinup girl" in the early 1940s. Her story seems too bizarre to be true. One of America's most famous models, brainwashed by the CIA? Yes, it is another example of truth being stranger than fiction.

The story begins with Candy's wedding to Long John Nebel, New York's most successful radio talk-show host. During the wedding, and regularly thereafter, Candy's personality would seem to shift. She would suddenly change from her affable, self-effacing self to a brusque, aggressive "stranger." For the first few months of the marriage, these shifts were infrequent enough that Nebel didn't worry much about it, but as time went on, they got worse.

Nebel began trying to relax his wife by hypnotizing her. Although Candy insisted that she couldn't be hypnotized, she slipped easily into a relaxed state, and then into a healthy, deep sleep. But during the third session, with no suggestion from Nebel, Candy spontaneously regressed to a young age. After that, Nebel began to record their sessions.

The result of these sessions was that Nebel discovered his wife had been brainwashed into have a second identity, "Arlene," whom a CIA doctor had used to carry messages all over the world. Eventually, Candy was tortured at CIA headquarters, so that her doctor could display her "successful" programming.

"The Control of Candy Jones" sent shockwaves through the corridors of power when it was first published in 1976. After reportedly being suppressed by the CIA, it became an instant classic, and remains so today.

Disturbing but important

Easy reading. Clearly and concisely details the sinister mind control programs of the CIA. Candy Jones' "handler," a CIA "doctor" who uses her as a guinea pig in CIA mind control experiments, is a psychopath who tortures her as if she is simply an object in his experiments. This man most likely was an offshot of the "doctors" who were smuggled into the USA in Operation Paperclip, the program which got the "important" Nazis out of Germany and brought them over here. Important reading for anyone who wants to know the sick and sadistic hidden influences which affect the country. You couldn't make this stuff up. Bain's writing is excellent, as usual.

Interested in Mind Control?

Having read quite a bit on MK ULTRA and mind control in general, I decided to find out more about Candy's story, having been a celebrity of some renown. It is a great book for many reasons. First, if you have read the likes of Brice Taylor or Kathleen Sullivan, both victims of mind control that involved lots of torture as well, this is different. Candy was limited to deep drug induced hypnosis exclusively, as far as I can tell. As a result, she had only 2 primary personalities, rather than hundreds. Most remarkable is how her personality split, with her innocent consciousness unaware and un-bothered. Her secret alternate took on the rough crude hardened personality that enabled Candy to survive. Some fascinating psychology revealed in this tale. One very interesting result. Her programmer turned out to be the same one who programmed Sirhan Sirhan, who has long been alleged to have been mind controlled when he killed (allegedly) RFK. She names the place of operation in Oakland-San Fran area and other details. To the best of me knowledge, this has never been found or revealed in any RFK conspiracy info. So now allegations are looking a lot more plausible. All knowledge connects, sooner or later. This is a fairly rare book that can only be found used, that I am aware. If you can get it at a good price, don't pass it by!

Some Neat Observations

This book has some interesting thoughts on the authors famous parents, although somewhat harsh on his grandmother - Sara. It certainly illuminates the divide in his family with Elliot, who appears to be a bit of a maverick - he joined the Republican Party and opposed his father's third term.

It's amazing how often those Roosevelt's got married (see page 321) and how many children they had from all their spouses! It's a more or less candid view of his upbringing.

I'm a senior general surgery resident. This is the first surgical anatomy/technique book that really illuminates the anatomy in such a way that it *sticks*. I've found myself using it to solidify my understanding of anatomy for non-vascular procedures as well. I wish I had discovered this book when I was an intern! I also wish there was a non-vascular general surgery text that was as well-written and illuminating.

I played competitive baseball from the age of five through college. I am an avid reader, and own many books about baseball, baseball players, and baseball techniques. As a first year high school coach, I purchased several books to help me develop a good program. This books is a must have. It was my favorite. It is all it says and then some. I highly recommend this book!

This overlong yet at times engrossing saga traces the intricate relationship between two gifted but ill-fated Hungarian families. Istvan and Matyas Kardos are nine and 14 when their parents are massacred during the Hungarian uprising of 1956. Spirited out of the country to live with relatives in Kentucky, they follow disparate but equally successful paths: Istvan (now Steven) becomes a U.S. congressman and Matyas (Matthew) a prosperous financial analyst. Steven's ties to Hungary remain strong; he never forgets his youthful love for Katalin Gaspar. From the author of Rightfully Yours (1989) and First Born (1987), another commercial stew--or rather a goulash, since the subject is chiefly 20th-century Hungary--with a dash of concert- hall music and Washington skulduggery thrown in for seasoning. Mortman's wild rose is the daughter of a famous Hungarian violinist, Zoltan Gaspar, whose nonpareil hands were wrecked by a zealous officer at a Stalinist concentration camp. But Katalin, a child prodigy at the piano, carries on the family name by winning the Salzburg competition and earning a scholarship to Juilliard. In New York she reconnoiters with handsome young Steven Kardos, a hero in the Children's Army during the l953 uprising, then American immigrant and Vietnam Green Beret. But their hot young love gets nipped in the bud when Katalin's called back to Budapest to attend to her ailing mother and can't get permission to leave Hungary after Maria Gaspar dies. So she plays behind the Iron Curtain, dallies with dissidents and gypsies, and marries the Communist hard-liner Major Laszlo Bohm. Meanwhile, Steven goes to law school, weds the dauntlessly wicked Cynthia Rhinehart, and heads to Washington as a congressman. Of course, their paths cross again, now at a Kennedy Center concert (with Bernstein conducting, no less), leading Steven to maneuver himself into the Hungarian ambassadorship--from which post he plots the overthrow of Bohm and the long-delayed attainment of Katalin. Plot and settings are decently handled, but there's no excuse for the way this novel runs on: 750-plus pages are larded with unenthralling secondary characters and long scenes whose gist could have been handled in a paragraph--making this more of an endurance test than a read, even for people who have absolutely nothing planned for the summer. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. An amazing new awareness of Hungarian history!

I loved this book! The connection to music was wonderful for me, personally. What I found, though, was an understanding of what the Hungarian people have gone through which was truly valuable to me. I have Hungarian neighbors whom I had no sensitivity towards before I read this book. While seeking my own pleasure in the reading of a novel, I garnered an appreciation for these people that wasn't available to me and I likely would not have looked elsewhere. Thankyou to Ms. Mortman for the human and historical lessons that everyone should be privey to!

Vadrozsa (Hungarian for Wild Rose)

I was born and raised in Hungary and lived there during WWII and the 1956 revolution. I was inside the Budapest Ghetto and was liberated by the Soviet Army on Jan 18, 1945. I was also at the square where Stalin's statue was dragged down and that event was probably comp[areable to the fall of the Berlin Wall. I personally had no political problems, and was unaware of Recsk, but my cousin did have a friend who was imprisonned there and the place was a reality. Also there was a very famous opera singer who came in from the west toerform and was not allowed out for years, so Katalin's forced stay is a reality. The book is extremely fascinating, gives a good insight to the life in Hungary during WWII and the Soviet occupation. While fiction, it should be read for it's historical insight and accuracy. As one who lived thought tese tines I higghly recommend to everybody. Great book!!!

something to return to time and time again

Being an avid reader of all types of fiction, especially those pieces that are more than 400 pages, this is a book that I have read so many times that the spine is worn and the pages are dog-eared. "Watching" Katya and Steven and Mat grow up into deep, caring, compassionate people is a rare thing in the main characters of books today. The relationship between Katya and ALL the people in her life is something to envy. Everyone is so passionate about what they believe in and how they feel. It's amazing to watch them interact. I truly recommend this to anyone who likes a well earned ending with lots of character and personality struggle.
