A Must-Read for Scholars, Astronomers and Homer's Fans Alike!

What could be more natural (and "hidden" in plain sight) than that Homer, as an epic poet circa 750 BCE, would weave aspects and cycles of the sun, moon and other heavenly bodies into the descriptions of nature that surround his magnificent story of the life of Odysseus? This is an important book for any professional scholar of Homer, for people who study early Western astronomy, and for those who just want to know Homer's works in always-richer ways. Fully worth your money, time and study. Let me show why this book is a major contribution to its fields.
I've lived in Crete and studied the archaeology of Minoan civilization (3000-1450 BCE) for over 30 years. Have authored the novel "Ariadne's Brother" (1996) and the nonfiction work of archaeoastronomy "Calendar House: Clues to Minoan Time from Knossos Labyrinth" (2011: online at ANCIENTLIGHTS dot o-r-g), and I continue studies of the post-Minoan world from Mycenaeans to Cyprus and their descendant Philistines. For those reasons and after close readings of "Homer's Secret Odyssey," I can say that Florence & Kenneth Wood's line-by-line analysis of Homer's original language and references, based in the original insight of American scholar Edna Leigh, clearly demonstrates that the poet framed Odysseus' life within a carefully-defined and delineated lunar/solar cycle---that is, an 8 and 1/2-year period that begins and ends with New Moon at or near Winter Solstice (and is followed each time by Full Moon/Summer Solstice). And, note: When you double THAT period, you soon see a second major event-cycle repeat itself: a Saros eclipse, which occurs precisely along an 18+year "string" of anniversaries. These periods the Woods clearly demonstrate in the imagery of Odysseus' circular journey from home to the Trojan War, through his wanderings and back home again. And it cannot be coincidental that research in "Calendar House" (detailing Minoan astronomy in their long pre-Homeric period) indicates EXACTLY the same lunar/solar cycles revealed by the Woods' wholly-independent findings in Homer's epics.
There's nothing New Age or "DaVinci" about these "secrets." Rich, detailed, meticulous and exhilarating work---a densely documented pleasure to read and keep learning from. It refreshes our understandings of Homer in the best way, revealing more of how wholly immersed the Greek world was (and is) in nature and its cycles.

Excellent

The book was on par with Hamlet's Mill, easy to read and packed with astronomical information that has a high probably of being relevant to Homer's works. Years ago, I read Penelope had 108 suitors and nearly fell off my cosmic-astro chair. So on hearing of this book, and also reading the Wood's "Homer's Iliad" I was off to the races.
