I am a medical student from St Georges and find that the book is very good for several reasons. Firstly, it is the first OSCE book to actually have all the specialties in place. Generally, things like psychiatry or obstetrics & gynecology are usually missed out or if they are covered, they are done very sparsely. This is the first book that I have seen to actually cover all the specialties with good depth. Secondly, having read the different sections, I love the 'PRESENT YOUR FINDINGS' section at the end of each section. How many times have we as medical students found ourselves being put on the spot to present to a senior doctor? I have been looking for a book to tell me how to do this, and this book does just that. It also teaches how to present Chest X-rays and ECGs using very good illustrations, which I have found lacking in several books. Finally, I find the structure of the book easy to follow with nice and simple explanations. In addition, there are several sections that are not there in any other OSCE books such as the paediatrics section on Non-Accidental Injury, which is something that is so easy to throw into an OSCE in all medical schools, as it is becoming more and more common. All the chapters are also very well laid out with differential diagnoses just next to the history sections in those chapters, which is a nice added feature. All in all, a good investment that I would recommend to all my fellow students out there and I am anxious to get stuck into the rest of the chapters. (Venkat Thiagarajan, Medical Student)

There are few experiences more daunting for medical students than facing the clinical OSCE. The examiners’ faces are often unfamiliar, the pace is out of their control and there is little opportunity to go back and correct mistakes. However, in many ways, those are features of real world practice where junior doctors have to respond to events in real time. For that reason, many medical educators consider the clinical OSCE as the ultimate objective test of readiness to practice. For many years now I have been in the enviable position of merely having to tick the boxes on the marking form. However, I’ve not forgotten the stress that the occasion can induce in even the most talented of students. My advice to my own students is that the best way to mitigate the effects of the inevitable stress, and to perform well when the bell sounds, is to be well prepared. About the Author
Zeshan Qureshi is a Paediatrician based at Great Ormond Street and the Institute of Global Health. He graduated with Distinction from the University of Southampton, and has published and presented research work extensively and internationally in the fields of pharmacology and medical education. Whilst working in Edinburgh he was part of the leadership team developing a near peer teaching programme, where by junior doctors, throughout south east scotland, were both trained to teach, and delivered teaching across every hospital in the area. This book is an extension of this philosophy: that junior doctors and fresh graduates know how to express complex ideas in order for it to be easily understood from a students perspective. That junior doctors can teach, and write in a complimentary way to senior doctors: one that is friendly and fun, easy to read and relevant to both exams, and the day to day to life of junior doctors.

The contributors argue two key points: 1) that ontological insecurity may set in motion political and social processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts; 2) that coping with peace anxieties necessitates the formulation of alternative self-narratives at the individual, societal, and state levels that re-situate the Self in relation to Other and to the world at large. Consequently, the book analyses the ways in which, and the conditions under which, conflict resolution induces ontological insecurity, and the different ways in which ontological insecurity has prevented the successful culmination of peace processes in different conflict contexts, including Cyprus, Israel-Palestine and Northern Ireland.

This is, without doubt, one of the best and most balanced works on the Holy Spirit I have read. The author traces the person and work of the Spirit from Old Testament to New. Of particular interest is his balanced treatment of the fullness of Spirit-given gifts and giftedness within the framework of apostolic history and sacramental theology. Just finished this book, and as a Reformed Charismatic, it is "worth its weight in gold"! The last two chapters of this revised edition are worth a million bucks alone! They are a nice survey of the past 20-30 years of the charismatic movement's "hit and misses" within the Christian world. I'm a pastor of an independent-charismatic church in Latin America (Puerto Rico, a hispanic commonwealth of the USA in the Caribbean), with an essentially-reformed theology stance. I was raised within a classical Pentecostal church, and spent my adult-youth years in a neo-pentecostal, Third Wave church plant. Nowadays I spent my whole available time reading, studying and attending conferences derived from early Protestant, Puritan and new-calvinism sources (all of them from evangelical mainline sources). I have seen the issues this book describes first-hand, and I am currently dealing with the debates, struggles and challenges to balance it all and package it for a congregation that is accustomed to solid biblical teaching but at the same time has a deep hunger and need for the Spirit work among them. The notion that the Spirit "is well and alive, thank you!" is certainly a most profound need for the church at large today. My only concern with the book is his treatment of the charismatic movement within the Catholic Church without qualifying what to do with the doctrinal differences that are still valid, between Protestants and Catholics. Certainly, the work of the Spirit among them is a needed corrective for all the saints that are inside the Catholic Church, but are in need of a real experience and manifestation of God among them. But, what to do with the heresies and plan apostasy that marks some doctrines within Romanism? Do we fall short of evangelizing the catholic faithful because they are partaking the same Spirit as we are? My stance is that we shall strive for a continuous openness to a shared experienced in prayer, worship, and longing for God, but with a clear definition and a firm stance on the issues that we understand are vital for the salvation of the soul. Our problem is not with the faithful among them, but with the institutional Church that is teaching a false Gospel to the world at large. And that's exactly why the charismatic movement is so important for the Church: it is the Spirit that was sent to us to "show and remind us the truth of Christ", and is the unrestricted Spirit that will make the faithful from all denominations and creeds, to "come out" and hear Christ's calling. The world needs a vibrant, solid, relevant-ancient church on their midst. Pray for God to do it powerfully in our time!

Marching to the Sound of His Own (Guitar)!

Jeff Beck has been labeled "the greatest guitarist of his generation" by numerous other guitar heroes. As borne out by Martin Power's exhaustive - and sometimes exhausting - biography, Beck certainly deserves that honor although he'd be the first one to shrug that honorific off. Beck was and is his own man and musician and worst enemy. HOT WIRED GUITAR is a fascinating chronicle of that talented and complex individual.

Power's book charts Beck's life and times from day one to his breakout splash with the Yardbirds and his subsequent career cranking out solo projects, forming new bands, sitting in on other artists' records, performing at charity affairs and forever working on his beloved classic cars. Beck's time on earth has been marked by his musical versatility and itchy musical feet that saw him creating new bands and new sounds only to move on to new projects and new bands, ever the musical explorer. The result of all that musical wanderlust is an incredible output of music.

I first became aware of Beck through his recordings with the Yardbirds. The group may have been good with Clapton but, when Beck joined them, the Yardbirds took off musically. Hearing Beck tear through various songs, I kept thinking, 'what planet is that guy from?' When Beck left the group, the (musical) sky became the limit.

If any musician deserves a 500+ page biography, it's Jeff Beck. He's boldly gone where few musicians went before and still is. Beck's life is well-told in HOT WIRED GUITAR. Highly recommended.

One nitpick. Couldn't the author and/or publisher have come up with a better pix of Beck than the "police blotter" shot on the cover? He deserved better.

Not worth it

The book has some nice material. Specifically, the stroke technique work, and the fact that so many high caliber coaches are represented, but I was disappointed with the overall product.

I was hoping for more specifics on energy systems, sets, and what those sets are trying to accomplish. I was hoping for an entire book written in the same spirit as the Bowman article that is available to the public for marketing purposes. The Bowman article talked about training for the 200 fly, lactate buffering, stroke rate and efficiency, etc, etc. I could have even dealt with some more scientific rigor and dry physiological stuff, but what I read was pretty fluffy as an entire package. I didn't want entire sections and chapters devoted to motivating a swim team and reasons that various age groups go into competitive swimming.

I bought the book because of what was advertised to me, the Bowman article, and was not happy with the rest of the book.

This book provides a comprehensive update from the old "Swim Coaches' Bible."

The sections on underwater kick, sprint, and mid distance are phenomenal and incredibly helpful in designing work outs.

The section on distance swimming was not as good as the previous books section. It was not nearly as thorough as the previous books. While they introduced some great new concepts, the authors of that one section did not offer a conclusive report.
