Precise to the point study guide for the exam

I bought the book as a study guide for the VCA-DCV exam and it helped me pass it on my first attempt. It is broken down into six chapters that cover all the needed information to pass the exam. It also provides access to an online study tool that contains hundreds of questions which are like the ones you should expect on the real exam.
Four stars because I think for such a small book it is too expensive.

VCA-DCV being retired November 30, 2015

Keep in mind that the VCA-DCV is being retired November 30, 2015 and being replaced with the VCA6-DCV. I think this book is based on vSphere 5.5, so it's not going to have the latest/greatest topics for the new cert. However, you will still get a good basis of what vSphere is - you will just have to follow it up with v6 specific items.

Concise and to the point

This book has excellent exam coverage. The author did a great job explaining the different data center challenges and the solutions provided by VMware. This book define/explains a lot of VMware vocabulary and the underlying virtualization theory. The content does a good job laying the ground work for the VCP-DCV certification.

A Hilarious Romp Through The Halls of Academia

Cow Eye Community College is a rural institution offering up a well-rounded liberal arts and technical education program and sporting a curious atmosphere promising hope and advancement while actually delivering despair - or so observes an educational administrator who finds himself in the back country of the rural Cow Eye community facing down its biggest problem: ruin.

Charlie had no idea his job description was to include miracles and leadership on such a grand scale - but then, Charlie actually mirrors the atmosphere of Cow Eye perfectly: he's down on his luck himself.

Can the blind lead the blind? Evidently - but not without a lot of stumbling, as the whimsical and testy Cow Country reveals in the course of its romp through the politics and social mores of academia.

It's hard to neatly 'peg' the reader of Cow Country. Certainly, a sense of humor is a prerequisite. Another a 'plus' would be a familiarity with the inner workings (and ironies) of higher education (of which this reviewer has some light experience from decades past), which come to light in a series of encounters and vignettes that deftly comment on community college functions and institutional actions that alienate as much as they seek to unite.

As readers move through the dubiously hallowed halls of higher education, they will come to find that the initial prerequisite of some familiarity with a community college structure, though desirable, is not actually a prerequisite: those who have any kind of insights on institutional ironies and inconsistencies will relish Cow Country's hard-hitting observations about life in the slow lane of reluctant change.

In the end, shelve any concerns that Cow Country will be indecipherable and uninteresting to any but the academic or institutionally-immersed reader: it's a story with universal appeal, and it's a tour de farce that opens with a downtrodden administrator facing the threshold of historic change in a small community, walking over the line, and continuing down the road into the sunset, concluding with a single program connecting sex and enlightenment with the wider goals and struggles of a community college environment.

Cow-Punchin' Maverick of a Novel

Let me admit up front that I bought this book after reading Winslow's review in Harper's, wherein he deduces that the author is actually Thomas Pynchon. Being a Pynchon fan and having taught English for 30 years at public institutions (20 of these at a community college), this book seemed up my alley.
Reading was slow going at first. It took forever for the first-person narrator, Charlie, to get from the bus stop to the campus. But as he settled into his new job, the pace picked up. The novel doesn't have much of a plot. Charlie's misadventures in preparing for the returning accrediting committee reminded me of K's tribulations meandering around Kafka's Castle.
Characters are distinguished not by personality traits, diction, or styles of expression, but by the content of their speech. The local Establishment supports the old Cow Eye Junction meat-eating, hard-drinking lifestyle. They are represented metaphorically by the drought-stricken brown (male) wasteland surrounding the campus. The newcomers are vegetarian yuppie dopers, represented by the lush, water-soaked (female) campus. But both worlds are no places to set up permanent residence. One is "desiccated" and withered; the other is self-centered and phony.
Charlie tries to figure out how to reconcile the two. He makes attempts to ascribe allegorical meaning to events at the college--like the calf-castrating initiation for new faculty. It's a lost cause. As Blake puts it, "That which is explicit to the idiot is not worth my care."
Read solely as a satire of academia, the novel would be amusing. Pearson skewers just about every aspect of teaching and administrating at a community college, from the opening convocation in the cafeteria to the classroom visits to the faculty social hours. No department, no discipline is left untouched. But despite the fun, like all satire, it has a serious theme. What the book suggests about the future of academia, culture, society, and the environment is indeed sobering.
So, to return to the beginning: Did Pynchon write this? I think it's likely. However, even if he didn't, Cow Country might be the ultimate metafiction. Persons/Pearsons/personas are writing reviews and commenting on them in ways that sound suspiciously like the author, or someone pretending to be the author, or the author pretending to be Pynchon, etc., etc. Who knows? Maybe I'm actually Pynchon. Or Pearson. Or not. Postmodernist literature doesn't get better than this.

Ambition and Ability

During one of Cow Country's characteristically biting scenes of burlesque, a young man recites the rules of good fiction: plot must be straightforward and transparent; motivations must be logical and reasoned; unnecessary words must be trimmed (along with unwarranted punctuation, including the exclamation mark); prose must be realistic and understated; dialogue must be feasible to the point that characters' spoken pronouncements resemble the guttural utterances of precocious third-graders; and philosophy must be excised "like the scrotum from a three-month-old calf."

I am happy to report that this advice is gleefully ignored by the novelist who put it in his character's mouth. On the rare occasion that I tune into a boxing match, I don't want to see Floyd Mayweather eke out a boring, technical win: I want to see Ali standing over Liston in a position that could not have been better premeditated for a photo-shoot. I want to see ambition and ability in a reckless game of one-upmanship. The author of Cow Country, I think, agrees.

(And even if none of the foregoing were true, I could not dislike a novel within which is to be found the line "My wife had a vagina made of butter, you know.")

This is the book I was looking for!

I have been looking for a book that would help me refine my designs and write them in pattern form. This is not just a helpful book in that regard this is *that* book, the book that makes sense of all the little bits and pieces, fills in the gaps in my knowledge base and helps me understand what I'm doing with yarn.

Written and published in the UK in 1990 I feel this book is even now ahead of it's time. From the back "Contents include: the Japanese pattern format; exploring and mixing stitch patterns; bias knitting; pattern notation; the fitted sleeve shape and garment design; colour, design and the dropped shoulder line"

Kinder's writing style is impeccable, clear and conversational. She doesn't resort to terse knitting term and she doesn't gloss over the math or assume that her readers can't keep up with her. My eyes started to glaze over (just a tiny bit, out of habit) when she hit the "magic formula" but I turned the page and found that I really do understand it now. It's not a huge tome at 160 pages, but it's packed with information and I feel much more confident not only in my design abilities but in my ability to communicate my designs via a written (and charted!) pattern.

Here once again Lemony tells the meaning of many words (usually with words that need the meaning explained.) We are treated to the difference of literally and figurative among other such concepts.
Naturally they think everyone is Olaf. And of course they are correct. A mystery has to be solved and to do this Violet must learn Klaus's skills of reading apprehension. Then there are lives to be saved and Klaus must learn Violets' inventive skills. Sunny stays En garde.

Don't bother. Online travel forums would be a much better choice.

I've been waiting for months for this book in preparation for my second trip to Myanmar (scheduled for later this year), but only minutes after I received and opened it I saw it was a huge letdown. For my first trip in October 2013 I bought the Lonely Planet 2011 version, which was basically the only guidebook available and which was already hopelessly out of date by then; I realize a newer version has been published but since I always prefer RG to LP guides, I chose RG this time. Unfortunately, it turns out to be not perceptibly more updated than the 2011 LP, and offers precious little more information (with Tanintharyi Region, which has recently and slowly been opened up, being the one notable exception), insight, or new listings. In fact, entire areas that were at least tentatively covered by the 2011 LP and that have since become accessible for foreign travelers (Chin State, for example) are not even mentioned in this book. So it's money wasted as far as I'm concerned, and I will have to stick to the online forums and a couple of useful websites I've found after all.

I have used the newly-issued guidebook extensively in arranging a trip to Myanmar that I will be making in Dec. 2015. My only criticism, which I hope is constructive, is that the guidebook does not mention any of the travel agencies that have offices in Myanmar (or in Bangkok), but is rather confined to U.K. and other overseas agencies. I know from repeated experience that it is typically possible to save 25 percent or more by booking directly with a firm that is located in or very close to the country one is visiting

About the Author
DWAYNE D. GREMLER, Bowling Green State University, received his MBA and PhD degrees from Arizona State University. He is a passionate advocate for the research and instruction of services marketing issues. He has served as Chair of the American Marketing Association’s Services Marketing Special Interest Group and has helped organize services marketing conferences in Australia, The Netherlands, France, and the United States. He has been the recipient of several research awards and while a professor at the University of Idaho, Dr. Gremler received the First Interstate Bank Student Excellence in Award for teaching, an award determined by students in the College of Business and Economics.

MARY JO BITNER serves as Academic Director for the Center for Services Leadership at Arizona State University. Dr. Bitner was a founding faculty member of the Center for Services Leadership created for the study of services marketing and management. Dr. Bitner has published more than 50 articles and has received a number of awards for her research in leading journals, including the Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Retailing, International Journal of Service Industry Management, and Academy of Management Executive. She has consulted with and presented seminars and workshops for numerous businesses. In 2003, Dr. Bitner was honored with the Career Contributions to the Services Discipline award by the American Marketing Association’s Services Special Interest Group.

Valarie Zeithaml is the Roy and Alice H. Richards Bicentennial Professor of Marketing and Associate Dean for the MBA Program at the Kenan-Flagler Business School of the University of North Carolina.
