About the Author

Donald R. Bear is director of the E. L. Cord Foundation Center for Learning and Literacy where he and preservice, Master’s and doctoral students teach and assess children who struggle to learn to read and write. Donald is a professor in the Department of Educational Specialties in the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno. Donald has been a classroom teacher and he researches and writes about literacy development and instruction. He is an author of numerous articles, book chapters, and books, including Words Their Way® , Words Their Way ®with English Learners, and Vocabulary Their Way.

Shane Templeton is Foundation Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he is Program Coordinator for Literacy Studies. A former elementary and secondary teacher, his research focuses on the development of orthographic knowledge. He has written several books on the teaching and learning of reading and language arts and is a member of the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary. He is author of the "Spelling Logics" column in Voices from the Middle, the middle school journal of the National Council of Teachers of English.

Marcia Invernizzi is a professor of reading education at the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. Marcia is also the director of the McGuffey Reading Center, where she teaches the clinical practica in reading diagnosis and remedial reading. Formerly an English and reading teacher, she works with Book Buddies, Virginia's Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI), and Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS).

Francine Johnston is a former first grade teacher and reading specialist who learned about word study during her graduate work at the University of Virginia. She is now an associate professor in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she teaches courses in reading, language arts, and children's literature. Francine frequently works with regional school systems as a consultant and researcher. Her research interests include current spelling practices and materials as well as the relationship between spelling and reading achievement.

Kids like the online sorting games and is easy to use

I purchased this for a college course but now use it all the time as a new teacher to assess my students weekly. Kids like the online sorting games and is easy to use. I am a special education teacher and teach using alternate curriculum with CCEE standards. I have seen improvement with my students who are labeled as CD. Not just for regular education!

I wish I would have had this in September

I brought this book as a requirement for class and the more I read it the more in love with it I am becoming. This book is not only useful for accessing the skills of students and grouping them, it also provides blanks of the assessments, games and an online feature. (I must admit that I have not used the online feature and probably won't do so as I am a bit old fashioned when it comes to keeping records). As a fairly new teacher I must say that this book is God sent. I'm considering buying the other books within the series as well. Ps, if you love in PA this book is also a good resource to use for studying the PRE-K/4 PECT exam :)

Essential part of K-12 grade teacher kit

One of the best programs out there to teach kids spelling through play. Even if just for the lists of word sorts, or for the placement test, make sure you have this book in your collection. There are words and games from prereader level to high school. Also, great help for SAT.

"Scenical presentation" warrants some criticism - More difficult reading than some Jacobean plays

The Revenge of Bussy D'Ambois (1611) is an unconventional revenge play that is sometimes cited as an example of anti-revenge drama. It has also been called political theater, one notable for its philosophical digressions. In his preface Chapman hints that the undramatic nature of his play was subject to criticism, admitting that "in the scenical presentation it might meet with some maligners".

From a dramaturgy perspective George Chapman's difficulty is that of translating the resolute inwardness of his Stoic protagonist, Clermont, into a theatrical form. Much dramatic action occurs off stage with details learned through dialogue.

I found George Chapman's work slower reading than other Jacobean plays. It was necessary for me to frequently refer to the explanatory notes. (I recommend the Oxford World's Classics edition titled Four Revenge Tragedies; the extensive introduction and notes compiled by Katherine Eisaman Maus are quite helpful.)

My difficulty with The Revenge of Bussy D'Ambois was not limited to Chapman's archaic vocabulary, unfamiliar topical allusions, and frequent references to Greek and Roman mythology. Chapman assumes that his Jacobean audience is familiar with the political situation in late sixteenth century France as well as with personages like Henry III, Monsieur (Duc d'Anjou), Guise, and Chatillon. His audience need not be told that although Henry is in firm control at the play's end, Henry would in reality be assassinated by his rivals within a year. The audience was also aware that this play is a loose sequel to Chapman's earlier play, Bussy D'Ambois (1607).

The stoic Clermont D'Ambois takes minimal revenge for his brother Bussy's death, doing no more than challenging his brother's murderer, Montsurry, to a duel. He patiently and scrupulously follows the rules governing such duels, and dispassionately carries out his obligation of vengeance, avoiding the disproportionate excesses that characterize more conventional (and bloody) revenge tragedies like The Spanish Tragedy, The Revenger's Tragedy, and Titus Andronicus.

The revenge itself seems secondary to Chapman's interest in elucidating Clermont's stoic philosophy, his concern with inner virtue, honor, and nobility, and his distain for outward appearances, wealth, and power. Obviously, Clermont was not a favorite of the royal court.

In the first act we learn that Bussy D'Ambois had been murdered due to an illicit affair with Tamyra, wife of Montsurry. Tamyra's own desire for revenge is more obsessive than Clermont's. She has good reason as not only had her husband killed her lover Bussy, but he had also tortured her ("these tortured fingers and these stabbed through arms") into confessing her adulterous activities. Nonetheless, Montsurry and Tamyra continue to live together, although not entirely in harmony.

Clermont's plan to duel Montsurry is derailed by the political scheming (and outright betrayal) by his false friend Baligny, Lord Lieutenant of Cambrai. Baligny says self-righteously to Henry: "Your highness knows that I will be honest, and betray for you brother and father, for I know, my lord, treachery for kings is truest loyalty,...". Furthermore, Baligny has falsely vowed to his wife Charlotte, sister to Bussy and Clermont, that he would avenge Bussy's death on her behalf.

George Chapman's The Revenge of Bussy D'Ambois proved to be an interesting counterbalance to more conventional revenge tragedies. I give this lesser known play four stars.

Note: Chapman's two D'Ambois plays were published together in July, 2007 by Kessinger Publishing, LLC. This new edition, titled Bussy D'Ambois And The Revenge Of Bussy D'Ambois, is edited by Frederick S. Boas. I have not yet seen a copy.

Many Tragedies Here

It is unfortunate that many of the Elizabethan dramatists are forgotten due to the immense genius of a Shakespeare, Marlowe, or Jonson and the breadth and length of their shadows. The Tragedy of Bussy d'Ambois, is one of those plays. Chapman begins his work with two of the most touching lines in English drama ( lines 18 to 19, Act 1, scene 2) and it just gets better. Heavily influenced by Seneca (see T.S.Eliot's essays on Seneca and Elizabethan drama), this play may sound artificial to modern ears, but once your ear is acclimated to the language the reader will find it a sonorous tune.

This edition admirably presents the works of Chapman and if I can be permitted a niggling complaint, it is that notes are not placed at the bottom of the page and navigation is a bit awkward. Nothing rivals the book "English Drama 1580-1642" edited by Brooke and Paradise, as an introduction to the drama of this period for the American student or reader in general. But if you would like an inexpensive introduction to Chapman, this is it.

What reader wouldn't like to visit the past? (with a return ticket of course) With this book, you are made aware of Past - raw isolation, candle light , no plumbing, open-fire cooking - the only communication by word of mouth or a rare letter. And on top of this, fear and dread ! And the undead seen abroad !
I became immersed in the life of 'The House' and of it's characters. Although the Prologue prepares you for fear, dread, revenge, Satanic superstitions - you only THINK you're prepared ! A beautifully written, dangerous, period story, (certainly comparable to Du Maurier's Jamaica Inn.) And all the more remarkable in that the story is based on actual events, and the author's research shines through, in the telling of this spine-chilling story ! Martina Devlin, Journalist and Author, leads us, gently but firmly into Fright-land !!

Surprisingly unputdownable for a story about witches

This is a gem. Not a book I would have ordinarily chosen but was amazed by how unputdownable it was. Martina Devlin just keeps getting better and better as a writer. This to me works as a part thriller, part timeless human story . I end up admiring the main character so much and empathising that I forget partly the witches part and that it's set hundreds of years ago. It's a story about life, hard challenges, the decency of human beings and the opposite. It's timeless. it s just a wonderful story and that's what life is about - this is one of them . Enjoy. Aileen

Very enjoyable

Really enjoyed this book, the story is engaging, all the more so as it's based on a true events. Mob mentality is well portrayed and the reader is carried along with events, all the while worried about what's going to happen next. Would definitely recommend this book to others.

Good book, worth the price

Not for beginners, I'm a few steps above a beginner so that wasn't a problem. Nice looking book and many good exercise tutorials. Ten times better than 3ds Max Projects: A Detailed Guide to Modeling, Texturing, Rigging, Animation and Lighting and half the price. Amazon.com trade in $1.35 LOL, I'll keep the book.

A pretty good book on character modeling for games, but not for a complete beginner.

I'll echo one of the reviewers and say that this book is exactly what I expected.

Since this book is 160 pages long, I didn't expected it to be an all-in-one, step-by-step guide on modeling, sculpting, texturing and retopologizing a game-ready character. Neither was I expecting it to be suitable for a complete beginner. Instead, what I expected from it was a making-of covering the process of making a character for games. And, as far as I can tell, it does a pretty good job!

This book is NOT for beginners since it assumes the reader is already "confortable" with 3ds Max and ZBrush. The book DOES NOT show how to accomplish a certain technique or to get to a particular tool. Instead it shows the main parts of the process, like modeling the character's base mesh in 3ds Max, developing this mesh through digital sculpting in ZBrush, mapping its coordinates in order to get textures, retopologizing it into a low-poly version and finally posing it for presentation.

Although the book covers all steps promissed, I still believe it lacks a bit in regards of balancing. I mean, the author spends just a few pages on how to model a base mesh in a 3D package (in this case, 3ds Max) and a lot of pages on digital sculpting in ZBrush, then a few pages again on retopologizing in 3ds Max. As a digital modeler/sculptor, I know that a character artist spends way more time sculpting a high-poly character than previously building a base mesh. However, in my opinion digital sculpting is pretty much an artistic process and so it can be achieved in many different ways, depending on the artist. Polygonal modeling, on the other hand, is more of a technical process and although it can be approached by different techniques (box modeling, edge extrusion) the end result should always be the same: a good, clean edge flow (a.k.a. topology).

Therefore my choice for a 4 star rating resides on the author spending less time on the most important aspects of game character creation, such as retopologizing and normal mapping. In my opinion the author could have covered those parts better either by increasing the number of pages or, if it was the case, by spending less pages on digital sculpting in ZBrush. In addition, the author also could have skipped the posing chapter since it is not as relevant as the other parts of the process. But if he considers it as a vital part for the content of the book, he could have chosen to pose the character using ZBrush's Transpose tool since it is way faster and easier than 3ds Max bones and skin combo.

All-in-all this is a well-rounded book brought to life by a recognized artist and 3DTotal Publishing excellent print quality. I recommend it to everyone with an intermediate level of knowledge in 3ds Max and ZBrush, who are seeking to create his/her own game-ready characters.

A book that truly deserves the title of Ultimate Guide....

3D Masterclass: The Swordmaster in 3ds Max and ZBrush: The Ultimate Guide to Creating a Low Poly Game Character is perfect for 3D artists who are frustrated by books that aren't step-by-step. Mr. Gavin Goulden's book leaves nothing to the imagination: he lays out everything he does from beginning to end. To be honest, I initially stayed away from this book because it was a ZBrush-3ds MAX book. Please do not make the same mistake. The book can be followed regardless of what 3d software the artist uses to retopologize their models: the same rules apply. The same goes for artists who start from scratch in Zbrush rather than build a base model in MAX or MAYA. There are also helpful tutorials on Xnormal and the Marmoset Toolbag in here. Mr. Goulden even went as far to include a section on how to rig in MAX. When it comes to low poly modeling, it is no secret the maps and shaders do the heavy lifting and Mr. Goulden spends a good portion of the book devoted to their creation and application. Bottom line: if you want to learn the art of low poly modeling for games, get this book; you won't regret it. I also recommend purchasing this book regardless of your level; this a book an artist can grow into.
