Tyrants?

This book is good, but the title is misleading. This book has every type of evil people except for terrorist leaders, evil henchman like Himmler, and serial killers, with the exception of Bathory. But that makes this book more fun in my opinion.

Tyrants from different walks of life

Overall, it is a pretty interesting book. It has a lot of information and facts. Historical data and explanation on the tyrants who wanted to rule the world or in some cases just their own part of it. One thing that sticks out the most is the common actions, trends, that all of those men, and some women, posses. Destroying opposition, high taxation, complete control of power without any rules or regulations. If there are any laws, constitution, that previously compiled the laws of the land, most of those tyrants first aimed to abolish that and place themselves as judge and jury. Interesting information and very educational in deed.

Couple of things that I didn't like or just maybe wish were different in this book.
1. Even thought some are explained in great detail, why they are considered tyrants, what did they
do, why they did what they did and many other aspects, there were others who were not described in
more detail that I know exists and would probably give a reader a better view into the true
tyranny behind those regimes and rulers.
2. There was one of the men described, that I am not clear what made his a "tyrant". If we would add
people based on what is explained in this book about Antonio De Oliveira Salazar of Portugal, we
can add pretty much the entire US Obama administration to the list as well.

Overall, as I have mentioned, it is a great book, but I wish it had a bit more information on some of the tyrants and explanation, otherwise I recommend it to anyone who enjoys history and it is a nice recap of most of the historical monsters.

Needs a theme

You would give this book to a child to read on this subject.

What the book needs is a definition of what to the writer, defines a tyrant! Without such a definition, all we have is an odd list of names with a brief description of each of their lives. Some are strange for example Elizabeth Báthory was not a ruler, a better description of her would be mass murderer. I was wondering why some like Louis XVI got on the list whereas Louis XIV did not? Who's who on the listing is all arbitrary.

One point I did notice is how few tyrants were punished for their crimes. Most of them got away with their crimes.

Now also titled 'One Night In Turin' in the USA

Enjoyed the book immensely. [Soon after finishing it, I discovered the DVD with the One Night In Turin title. That video production has been variously reviewed but it certainly adds enormously to the information in Pete Davies' book. In particular you get to see directly how England manager Bobby Robson was ill-treated by the press, and his resultant frustration and courage, see some interviews with key people, such as Gazza. Because of British accents and some unclear recording/ playback, I have difficulty making out what's being said -such as when Gazza is on an interview show, and there is no option for subtitling to help me .] A theme that Davies carries through his book is the scandalous fire-staring British tabloid press reports to those 'back home' of what was taking place with the England fans in distant parts of Italy and the major islands. According to Davies, small events involving British fans following the team in Italy- or not even 'events'- were portrayed in the most escalated, exaggerated and falsified terms in the tabloids. Davies or close associates would witness some encounter, and Davies compares again and again their perceptions with the explosive lies that appeared in tabloid headlines. I can agree with the other reviewer [so far posting here] that the book does slow at times, but I remained well interested. To the suggestion that a potential reader learn some football culture I will add: When you start to read, keep a card on hand and note down every person mentioned and what their role or job is, what team and city they are associated wirh, etc. It will help you keep from having to thumb back through the book to find the first mention of one of the MANY people who appear in the book. Had I done this at the start, it would have been significantly easier to grasp all the rich information. Davies seems to assume everyone is always aboard, while I was trying to keep a foothold. This may have been not the author's choice, but some editorial decision to have the book be a little more concise. Not that Davies wastes words. Made me want to read something else he'd written as did reading Joe McGinniss' The Miracle of Castel di Sangro and Tim Parks' 'A Season With Verona', both quite wonderful books on Italian culture, Italian football culture.. and fan behavior.

a great inside look

This is a terrific look inside the English team as they prepare for, and go through, the 1990 World Cup. It gives a good sense of the great differences in attitudes and feelings among the different players. And also the hounded feeling players have while trying to deal with their press obligations. It gets a little slow when he's talking about his trouble travelling and what happens to him between games. And you may want to read up a little on the football culture of this period first, as there are a lot of references to England being barred from European comps and the hooligan factor. But I guarantee that, once finished, you'll be looking up everyone that you read about to learn more. Oh, Gazza... what could have been.

The manner in which The Unofficial Guide to Passing OSCEs is written provides great appeal; the majority of information is written succinctly, allowing easy digestion and learning by the reader. Where necessary, the authors expand on information and provide links to the relevant resources. The numerous colour images describe the associated text very well. Overall, this provides a good overview of each skill without over-reliance on descriptive text and a revision tool that medical students should find easy to work with. ‘Present Your Findings’ sections are especially beneficial in this guide – it is hard enough for a student to perform a skill thoroughly, let alone having to present the findings of the skill in a logical orderly manner. Such sections provide a summary format from which the reader can learn how to communicate findings (an important aspect of OSCEs) – a skill that often helps examiners differentiate between competent and failing candidates. I am a medical student from St Georges and find that the book is very good for several reasons. Firstly, it is the first OSCE book to actually have all the specialties in place. Generally, things like psychiatry or obstetrics & gynecology are usually missed out or if they are covered, they are done very sparsely. This is the first book that I have seen to actually cover all the specialties with good depth. Secondly, having read the different sections, I love the 'PRESENT YOUR FINDINGS' section at the end of each section. How many times have we as medical students found ourselves being put on the spot to present to a senior doctor? I have been looking for a book to tell me how to do this, and this book does just that. It also teaches how to present Chest X-rays and ECGs using very good illustrations, which I have found lacking in several books. Finally, I find the structure of the book easy to follow with nice and simple explanations. In addition, there are several sections that are not there in any other OSCE books such as the paediatrics section on Non-Accidental Injury, which is something that is so easy to throw into an OSCE in all medical schools, as it is becoming more and more common. All the chapters are also very well laid out with differential diagnoses just next to the history sections in those chapters, which is a nice added feature. All in all, a good investment that I would recommend to all my fellow students out there and I am anxious to get stuck into the rest of the chapters. (Venkat Thiagarajan, Medical Student)

There are few experiences more daunting for medical students than facing the clinical OSCE. The examiners’ faces are often unfamiliar, the pace is out of their control and there is little opportunity to go back and correct mistakes. However, in many ways, those are features of real world practice where junior doctors have to respond to events in real time. For that reason, many medical educators consider the clinical OSCE as the ultimate objective test of readiness to practice. For many years now I have been in the enviable position of merely having to tick the boxes on the marking form. However, I’ve not forgotten the stress that the occasion can induce in even the most talented of students. My advice to my own students is that the best way to mitigate the effects of the inevitable stress, and to perform well when the bell sounds, is to be well prepared. The chapters are clearly written, in simple language that should appeal to students and reflect the fact that the authors themselves have recently been OSCE candidates. About the Author
Zeshan Qureshi is a Paediatrician based at Great Ormond Street and the Institute of Global Health. He graduated with Distinction from the University of Southampton, and has published and presented research work extensively and internationally in the fields of pharmacology and medical education. Whilst working in Edinburgh he was part of the leadership team developing a near peer teaching programme, where by junior doctors, throughout south east scotland, were both trained to teach, and delivered teaching across every hospital in the area. This book is an extension of this philosophy: that junior doctors and fresh graduates know how to express complex ideas in order for it to be easily understood from a students perspective. That junior doctors can teach, and write in a complimentary way to senior doctors: one that is friendly and fun, easy to read and relevant to both exams, and the day to day to life of junior doctors.
