I absolutely love this book series

I absolutely love this book series. This short story was a wonderful addition. I loved how this book was written from Jared's point of view. Amazing! I am totally psyched for the new book to come out later this year!!!

If this whole series was a movie, I would totally watch it. Then I would make all my friends and family watch it too. haha.

eh... stick with the main story.

I love the main story line, but this little short story seemed to depart from the original story cannon.

It's a "good read" on its own, but it really felt "wrong" in relation to the main story line.

The Unfortunate Fairy Tale series is a GREAT series of books, I'm always impatient to get the next book! If you're going to read, read the series.

I know it says this is a short story.. but this is really a SHORT story. There wasn't even enough time to really invest in Jareds character (which i don't feel i got enough of in the series personally so i was really hoping for more with this.)
I loved the series so i was really disappointed. I wouldn't suggest this short story but i most definitely still suggest the book series.

Daniel Simberloff is Professor of Environmental Studies and Director of the Institute for Biological Invasions at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Biological Invasions and senior editor of the Encyclopedia of Biological Invasions (University of California Press, 2011).

a must read for anyone who cares about our world

This is a good, thorough and comprehensive book about the disasters that non-native invasive species cause. It is a must read for everyone including policy makers and invasive species ecologists, especially those who keep trying to introduce more problems in misguided attempts to solve already introduced problems. This book give depth to my research in finding native answers to non-native problems, bioeradication.

The book could be edited a bit, but provides a huge amount of information in a palatable form.

As other reviews have noted, the book could use better organization, and perhaps some editing, as it is nearly twice as long as other books in the same series. It could also use more illustrations and some maps. It is also somewhat more technical than other books in the series, closer to a textbook than a book designed for the casual readers. That said, it is a quite good introduction to a surprisingly complex subject, and while a couple of the chapters are somewhat technical, most provide a great deal of information with rather a lot of examples.

A reader can pick and choose among the chapters. The following are the ones I think most interesting. Chapter 2 assesses biological invasions in terms of magnitude, geography and time. Chapters 3 and 4 examine the ecological effects of invasions. Chapter 6 is important, looking at how and why they occur. Chapter 7 asks if we can predict them. Chapter 8 is important but rather dull reading, on how biological invasions are regulated (not very well, by the way). Chapter 9 is the most technical, on detection and eradication. Worth noting is that technology is evolving quickly and it is possible that genetic modifications will soon be used to counter biological invasions.

Chapter 11 examines controversies surrounding the subject, including is eradicating invasive species xenophobic and related to racism and aren't invasive species also god's creatures (the author deals with these rather well). Chapter 12 is important, but seems to me to be incomplete, dealing with the 'homogeocene" meaning the probable future when life everywhere on the planet is essentially the same.

More Than What You Need to Know

This is a very good source or reference work. In fact the table of contents would make a good outline for a course on Invasive Species Management. The main feature is large lists of examples of a large range of invasive species issues; and there are a huge number of these examples. There is a very useful long list and index of species. The bibliography lists not only research and reference works but also a substantial list of web sites. As research the book is fairly well written and complete. This work is recommended for students or researcers in Invasive Species.

However, the subtitle reads 'What Everyone Needs to Know' and this means the book was meant for the general reader. The writing style is academic, as you get in research journal papers: basic, accurate, informative, and dull. The format is rather boring if you are not looking for something specific. There is a tendency to wordiness. Finally, this is much more than 'Everyone Needs to Know'. For research this very good. For the general reader rather lacking.

About the Author
Mandia Mentis is an educational psychologist and senior lecturer in the Special Education and Educational Psychology Programmes at Massey University, New Zealand. She is an accredited trainer of Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) and the Learning Potential Assessment Device (LPAD), having completed her training at the International Centre for Learning Enhancement in Israel under Reuven Feuerstein. Over the past 20 years, she has run Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) workshops with the Cognitive Research Centre in South Africa and with the Australasian Institute for Learning Enhancement in New Zealand. She has contributed extensively to research projects and publications and has co-written and published two books on Mediated Learning and Instrumental Enrichment. Mentis taught at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels and has worked as an educational psychologist in both special and inclusive education settings. Her teaching and research interests include cognitive assessment, teaching for diversity, and e-learning. Her doctoral research focuses on developing effective e-learning communities of practice.

Marilyn Dunn-Bernstein’s diverse career in education spans 36 years. Along with her 20 years as a high school vice-principal, she has studied under Reuven Feuerstein and implemented the principles of structural cognitive modifiability, IE, and MLE in an extensive range of educational settings. These included 10 years of research, writing, and lecturing with the Cognitive Research Unit of the University of the Witwatersrand and 16 years of work with the Gifted Child Program for disadvantaged individuals in South African townships. Her current work as a psychologist in Australia involves enhancing cognitive, emotional, and creative development in individuals with autism, Down syndrome, Asperger’s, and gifts. She also works with undergraduate psychology and social sciences students, and has been part of the team that runs Feuerstein workshops in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. She holds a PhD in education, a masters in psychology, and a degree in human behavior.

Martene Mentis has twenty years of experience in education and has taught at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Her diverse educational background includes 6 years with the Cognitive Research Centre, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, where she contributed to research, lectured in Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) workshops, and helped develop educational resources, including two books on Mediated Learning and Instrumental Enrichment. She completed her training in FIE under Reuven Feuerstein, at the International Centre for Learning Enhancement in Israel, and in the Learning Potential Assessment Device (LPAD) at the Cognitive Research Centre in South Africa. She has an honours degree in fine arts and a master's degree in education. She currently is an independent scholar, artist, and illustrator, working as an art educator and graphic designer in New Zealand.

So, it was a pleasant surprise for me to read Mambo Chita Tann's book on Haitian Vodou. Is it perfect? No. Could she, and I know her academic qualifications, have written a much more detailed and challenging, and hence for me more satisfying, text? Certainly. That being said, this was a great book. She gives a sound history, and contextualized these traditions in a way that was both accurate and accessible for the average reader.

There is another issue I have had more than once with this genre of book on Vodou. That issue is the "practical" ritual designed for non-initiates. Often they reflect the author's own imagination and do not represent anything found within the tradition itself. I recognize that a Mambo or Houngan (Vodou Priestess or Priest) may not be eager to give away their secret recipes or at least not in all details) but then don't invent new practices. Someone reading that book will think that what they have read is a "real" Vodou practice when it in fact is not. In this book Mambo T gives a detailed set of instructions for an iliminasyon (illumination) - a simply ritual for opening the way to better communication with one's loas, zanges, or spirits - the saints of Vodou. Some will have other ways to performing this, and it may be true that in many houses at least, the herbs and other components are different or more complicated than the recipe given here. However, this is a valid and effective ritual, and it is the real deal, not someone's invention from outside the tradition.

So, on a couple of the most important points, I give this book a big thumbs up! I still would argue that if this subject really interests you, you need to read the classics, especially those by Milo Rigaud, Maya Deren, and Alfred Métraux, but this is a concise, well written text with some practical advice for someone who wants to do more than read about this tradition. It has earned its space alongside those others.

Amazing and a must have!

This book, authored by Mambo T, as she is affectionately known, is an amazing introduction to Haitian Vodou. The much reviled and misunderstood spiritual practice is in actuality a beautiful and deeply moving tradition. Mambo Chita Tann conveys the essence of Haitian Vodou the way a person not able to live in Haiti, or not familiar with it's culture, can understand. She also stresses how important the community, family, and ancestors are to Vodou.

The book is broken down into three parts: Part One What is Haitian Vodou? Part Two Lezanj: Meet the Twenty-One Nations of the Lwa and Part Three Seremoni: Haitian Vodou Ceremonies and Rites of Passage. The chapters clearly present the information and are an indispenible resource for the beginner, as well as a refresher for the more experienced practitioner. It will help you on your path if you choose to become a Vodouisant, or if not, give a better understanding of how it all works. Additionally the Appendix provides a valuable guide for further research and study. One can only pray Mambo T will write a follow up book and delve deeper into Haitian Vodou.

I am ever grateful for all her hard work the last year, and for listening to her kids and elders who told her she really is the best person to get this introduction out there.

If you are interested in the Real Vodou, don't miss this book.

This is a great introduction to Vodou as practiced in Haiti. Mambo explains very clearly the structure of Vodou in Haiti and how to proceed to begin to practice this religion of serving the Lwa. Wonderful information about many of the major Lwa helps one understand them and their importance. Initiation is explained in a way that is very clear and one is shown the necessity of joining a societe in order to really learn how to serve the Lwa. Really good advice about how to avoid the pitfall of falling into the hands of charlatans and how to recognize a true Mambo or Houngan. All in all, this book is a MUST for anyone thinking about entering the path of Vodou as practiced in Haiti.
