A kid who doesn't fit in

Lewis is a misfit 9-year-old, in whose life hover adults -- parents and teachers -- who don't understand his quirky interests and social awkwardness. He wishes people would just leave him alone and stop fussing. Eventually his parents go on a trip for a week, leaving Lewis with Miss Fitchlow, an oddly accepting and affirming health nut who trusts him to make his own decisions (except about matches). With his new freedom, he finds another friend in a frustrated old man in the park, Mr. Madruga. The characters in this book are distinct and benevolent, and they help each other in unexpected and affecting ways. The author shows deep understanding into human nature, along with a genuine joy of living.
